hey guys and gals,

http://www.johnsongas.com/industrial/frn-solder.asp

i have one of these furnaces, practically brand new that was given to me a few years back. i had no clue what i was going to use it for but i knew it was worth keeping.

do you think it would work as a casting furnace? with 3 burners you have some serious control over temp, and it can be run off of propane which is nice.

it's a very versatile little furnace that has a lot of doors than can be open and closed for heating different materials, so even if it's not good for casting i think i'll get it up and running for the other tasks in the shop that require some heat

thanks for looking

I don't see why not. I've used the kitchen stove, coleman stove and and a turkey fryer all to cast on at one time or another. Sounds like you have a good set up.

I like that company. To annoy greenies, send 'em the brochure for their greenhouse CO2 generator !

i'm waiting to hear back from their rep to let me know how to check if its set up for propane of natural gas.
i can buy the burner tips for about$6 a piece to turn it to propane if it isn't already

ok so i was told to take some number size drills and check out the diameter of the jet tip.
if it's the smaller diameter its propane, if its the larger it's natural gas
i'll let you know guys know what i find out. if it's propane i'll see if i can fire the sucker up this weekend after putting together a hose and regulator set up.

This is similar to what I use, holds about 40 lbs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-32-Oz-1000-cc-Graduated-Stainless-Steel-Measuring-Beaker-Cup-kitchen-lab-/110802736973?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19cc5b974d

Wow, I didn't know they still made those burners.
I used them in my middle school shop class to heat soldering irons to solder together sheet metal boxes in the 80's.
We also used them to melt lead to make fishing sinkers.
They were all natural gas.

how did they work for making sinkers?

how did they work for making sinkers?

They worked well.
We made bank sinkers, egg sinkers, pencil, and split shot.
