How'd it go, white eagle?

white eagle

unfortunately the high winds kept the deer movement
non existent but I got home early and that brings me here
and to the casting bench so all is not a loss
nuther 5-6 days of hunting left

Keep the faith, my friend. A nice walk in the woods beats the heck out of sitting on the couch watching TV. Good luck on finishing your season with a bang.

What happened?

white eagle
01-04-2012, 09:52 AM
very inaccurate
now I expect a hunting round to
shoot consistent 1.0-1.5"@ 100 yds
if it don't do that I move on to something else

Obviously, the deer are a lot smaller in your part of the country! Ha ha.

white eagle
01-04-2012, 11:28 AM
its a personal deal
if I get a shot I want to know where the boolit will go
precision is what it is
if I get 2.5"groups at 100
then that is 7.5"(in theory) at 300yds
unacceptable ,for me
might just as well put a shotgun bead on the barrel and ditch the scope

I totally agree, pursue accuracy with fervor and believe that an accurate rifle makes me a better hunter.
I just built a short, handy rifle in .358 winchester (which by the way, loves the RCBS 35-200-FN FYI) Before I got the mold though, I had to use the Lyman 358318 which produced miserable accuracy on the order of Copenhagen can sized groups at 50 yards. It had to do though because it was the last day of rifle season here. I ended up shooting a deer at 50 yards and it died in short order and I have meat in the freezer. I couldn't help noticing how effective this "inaccurate" round was at putting the deer down. I realized, all of a sudden like, that as long as I am shooting deer at 50 yards or less, this round will do perfectly every time.
I still probably wont use it instead of the accurate load I now have, but sometimes I wonder if I am over thinking the whole accuracy thing when it comes to hunting.
Cudos though on owning an awesome caliber. .358winchester keeps surprising me with its accuracy, low recoil, and effect on the intended target. I cant believe this cartridge is not more popular than it is. Oh well, more for us!

Well, I'm looking for a 240 gr .358 mold. Perhaps you wish to sell it? I'd be interested in seeing some pics and the specs on it.
I looked on the Accurate Molds website catalog, and didn't see 240 gr .358

I might but the price would be higher than normal on
just had it hp'd by Erik
2c brass plus the hp

If you need a good mold you can have Tom at Accurate molds make one for you custom.
Check this one out!
http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=37-250B-D.png
It has the much needed bore riding section just in front of the grooves.
Tom is very reasonable, you should check out the site and see how cheap you can actually get a custom mold made for!

I wonder how either of those boolits would work in my Marlin in 356W??? I like the looks of the boolit you use White Eagle.

Tom told me he designed it for the 358 win
it works pretty good
now that my boolits have hardened and aged properly
I am getting real good accuracy with the boolit
try it

Eagle.

What load are you using for the 358 with that bullet. I have a four cavity mould with two different bullet weights a 230 and a 270 grain. I had the mould made for my Whelen, before I picked up a sweet little Ruger Hawkeye stainless synthetic in a .358 Winchester.

White Eagle, your bullet mold looks alot like the Saeco S352 mold, 35-245 gr.....

I have the Saeco 245 gr mold. My favorite loads for that bullet is either 37gr. 3031, or 40 gr. 4320. I have 2 custom 358 winnies, with Shilen barrels. 14" twist. Both like those two loads, or the Lyman 358009 with 34 gr. 3031. The 200 gr. Rcbs shoots good, too but I've only loaded light loads with 5744 for that boolit.:lovebooli

Been using the 200gr RCBS FN and had acceptable accuracy. Never hunted with with it but you get plenty of penetration with the 200 gr., especially for deer here in the east.....afish4570[smilie=s:

I have a new one coming from Tom that promises to be even more exciting and accurate
at least that is the plan

Which one are you getting Eagle? I have two for my 35 Whelen from Tom, but wishing I had ordered one with a larger meplat , like your 240 grain mould.

I have just loaded some Saeco 245 gr in my .358 18.5" Ruger -- with 38 gr of H322 -- the starting load will(I hope) shoot some today

Tom and I designed this one although I haven't got the mold as of yet
http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=36-265B-D.png.
I have a simlar design I got from SmokemJoe that I tried to copy and that is a
very accurate boolit but the meplat is not as large as the 240 from Tom
oh well ya give some ya loose some

brass mold coming
I just don't need a stock pile of boolits on hand

You done good!
I dont know if you have ever used one of Toms molds before, but I got a single, brass, in 36-210A. You will wonder if you are using the same alloy! Just a tip, it does take a couple of heatings to get the mold broke in. Also, that mold takes a long time to heat up, but it holds the heat better than anything else I have tried. The sprue plate on the other hand runs too hot, so it is helpful to have a damp towel handy to cool the sprue for 1 second every time.
Also, the sprue plate on Toms molds is thick and the hole is sharp, you dont need to whack on it with a stick, just keep glove on your right hand to open the sprue with. This actually reduces fatigue and you will be glad for anything that will help in that dept. Those brass molds are heavy!

I have over a dozen or so of Toms molds
actually most are brass
and have sold probably half again as many
didn't work out
my preference is brass but a very close second is iron
thanks for the tips

I like Tom's molds as well, but I have the same Saeco 245 gr. mold and it is deadly in my .356 Win.

I found when casting with Tom's mold, that as the alloy temp and mold temp get to proper operating temp, the sprue is easy to simply use a gloved hand on and swing it open. No need at all for a mallet or dowel. I just hate seeing the way some guys over on Youtube whack the **** out of their mold and sprue plates. I want to yell at them LOL.

Hunted the muzzleloader season in Pa. two weeks ago. The friend that I hunted with was 67 so he was able to use his .358 Ruger Frontier with 200 grain RCBS boolits for deer the last three days of the season. He scored a nice doe at about 35 yards through the base of the neck but needed a followup shot to the body that messed up the insides pretty good. Both bullets exited...

It was only his third deer and really wanted to take one with a cast boolit....

Nice! How fast is he pushing that RCBS bullet and do you know his alloy? I plan to use that combo in my .358 when our firearms season opens in a month.

took a doe with my 18.5'' 358 win and Saeco 245gr took her at 10 steps -- .60 cal holes rushed the shot and hit in front of both shoulders down -- when I called again up she came and then I put the next one were I thought the first one went to --that happened about 2 years ago
