This little thread really portrays the common element of this web site..........there is 2 photos and what holds #1 priority in this gentleman's mind..........the bullet.........second the deer...............this cast bullet mania has sterling moments of positive re-enforcement when
all goes as planned and keeps people including myself mentally occupied trying to keep all the variables in line resulting in these moments of true success.........I too am hoping to post photos
of my en devour getting my 40-65 sharps slinging 400 gr bullets for my up coming Buffalo hunt
that I have been drawn on here........anyway this struck me as really interesting.........

Good job, Ben! Pretty boolit, nice buck. Looks like a mature buck so will be good to get him out of the herd.
It's a good-looking boolit, Ron. Would kinda like to see the rifle but I'm funny that way. :)

The rifle is a TIKKA , 30-06 with a Redfield 6 X 18 Variable scope with an A/O. The rifle is a real nail driver.

............Good deal Ben! So what did the boolit do, sail on through, shed it's nose, hit any bone? Was it an old fashioned deer that pretty much died right there, or was it one of those new modern deer that was indignant it hadn't been shot with some patented technowhizz 180gr SPBT at 3150 fps?

Rick,

I didn't get the expansion I was looking for, but the bullet managed to pass in between ribs without hitting one of them.

The deer is dead, none the less.

Nice deer Ben. It looks like a big body deer so it will make lots of good meat. I used to try to get the wife to cover up the vension taste and get that "you can't tell its deer" taste, but thankfully now I like the taste of vension. Not that I like the taste of an old buck, but I will eat it if I harvest it.

Good job there, Ben! It looks like your cousin had success as well, so your work has definitely paid off.

As for young bucks vs old bucks, does, etc. I took an OLD buck this year and really can't tell the difference from much younger ones that I've taken in the past. This one was definitely "in the rut" with a huge neck and stunk! However, I've already eaten some of the backstraps, and its fine. My opinion is that the sooner you get the hide off and the meat cooled, the better. Too, I think it a mistake to cut the glands from the rear legs without washing your knife before cutting doing more cutting or skinning. Does? I dunno other than they definitely have more fat on 'em. Waht is it with them females?:kidding:

is that powder charge right?

Not certain what you're question is ? " Right " with respect to what ?

Ben

I guess it never occurred to me that a 30 cal boolit @ 1300-1400 fps would be adequate. When I think 30-06 I think my 165 gr j-bullets are ambling along when they only hit 2600 fps or so. You won't get any argument from me (or that spike), I was just trying to get everything straight so I could study on the concept some more. Very interesting, and again, well done!

TXGunNut :

OK, I just wasn't certain how to respond to your question. Yes, it is a "mid - range " load for the 30-06 .

16.0 grs. of 2400 and cast bullets in the 30-06 have been used for many yrs. as target loads out to 200 yards. Of course hitting paper targets and killing deer sized animals are 2 different things. The distances that I hunt in are limited , with a near 99% certainty of a shot within 100 yds.

It isn't a load that you can hap-hazardly fire at an animal and " hope for the best ".........., but placed properly, it is a killer. It takes us back to the old adage....." It isn't what you hit em' with, it is where you hit em' that counts.

Bullet placement ( and bullet performance ) with this kind of load is critical for achieving a quick and humane kill on the animal.

I know the numbers are there, Ben. I seldom take long shots-70 yds seems to be my norm lately-that's why this thread got my attention. So many hunts I go on are "unknown conditions" hunts where I don't know if my shots will be 250 or 50 yds so I'll take one rifle (30-06) that will do the long shots, another for short distances (45-70 or 35 Rem) and quite often another (stainless 30-06) for crappy weather. This thread has forced me to think outside the box...that's why I'm here.
I don't fling lead, I'm a pretty good tracker but would much rather be back in camp dressing, quartering and eventually toasting my success and the critter I cleanly killed. I work hard on my shots and only track about 25% these days, most for a very short distance.
You've really upset my applecart here, Ben. My primary M70 (WW Super Grade) has a very slick bore and likes mild loads...I really hadn't planned on a CB load for this rifle but it will happen, all in good time. Thank you, sir!

Good morning & Congradulations on the successful elimination of a corn cruncher !
That slug must be plodding right along at a stately 1350 fps...
