Nice! How large do Blacktails get compared to Whitetails or Mulies?

I lived in Alaska a while (Anchorage) in the early 90's, though I never did hunt then. We saw a lot of moose and would see bears occasionally and the mountain goats when we'd drive down the Kenai penninsula, but I don't recall ever seeing a deer of any kind.

Hi all Well a big black tail around here would be 150 lb. I shot this one with a ruger 77/44 with a lee 310 gr with 14.7 gr 2400 I shot another one earlier this week with the same load It's gratifying to harvest a deer with bullets I cast my self and had loaded. Can't wait till next season I have big plans for my 308 and a 200 gr hp .

this dear was about 30 yards hit him just behind the shoulder. that 310 gr punched right through him. That's what I expected it to do especially at that range.

Sitka blacktails tend to be rather small but not always. I consider the deer of the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island to also be Sitka's whether it is official or not due to the similar climate with Se Alaska. I have gotten a 3-pt (one side) that had a live weight of less than 70# while only a few miles away gotten another 3-pt with a live weight of 290# (no kidding).
They are an amazing creature with a habit that makes them particularly hard to hunt during the late season. A scientific tagging study showed that, to conserve energy in fall/winter storms, Sitka's would lay in one spot for a week or more without moving a muscle then for a couple hours between storms, every deer in the area would be active. Unless you are out walking around during the window, you would swear there wasn't a deer for miles.
The bottom line - hunt the early seasons if you can, not during the fall/winter monsoons. Nevertheless, I have been out in the late muzzleloading season more than once when that special window arrived and it is amazing which is why it is worth the wait.

310gr Lee strikes again!!

I got 4 with it this year myself - also pushed with 2400. I bet it would go full length through a deer without stopping.

Nice job.
