As the title says, I've got an Ideal 12 gauge slug mold that's missing the hollowbase pin. The only identification I can find on the mold, other than the name, is the number 105. Anyone know if one from a newer lyman will work? Is there a source of parts for old Ideal molds?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Lyman Foster slug mould and assume the Ideal is the same design. The Lyman sabot slug is the newer wad slug design. You need a deeper, larger round nose pin for the Foster mould if that is it.

Not sure if parts are available but a pin could certainly be made.

A photo would help identify the mould but if a Foster, I can measure up the pin and post dimensions along with a photo.

I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow. Didn't have a chance today. It looks like this. http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details-shotgun.php?entryID=85

That is the Foster slug.

The pin is a straight diameter piece of round bar with slight taper and round "nose" on it, not stepped like for the sabot slug.

The hole for the pin may vary from mine some as I understand some of these slugs cast as small as 0.685" but mine and most seem to cast at or around 0.705". If for some reason some are smaller then the pin may be as well.

You should be able to check the hole for the pin with verniers to get a diameter. I can measure my pin to get the rest of the dimensions. If diameter differs then you may have to scale or fudge a bit but the exact shape is not terribly important.

Pin dia. .554" of main shaft that goes into the mold, exact length that goes into the mold is 1.266",
you could vary the wt. of the slug based on the length of the pin and the frontal shape!

The above picture was from a series of pictures to convert Foster slug into Brenneke type!
Nothing fancy, just a heavy duty drill press used!

I just checked my pin and it is:

- 0.5564" where it goes through the mould blocks
- taper to 0.515" at start of hemispherical end
- length of pin into mould/depth of cavity in slug = 0.555"

The pin should be a very close fit to the mould blocks so it stays centered as best as possible.

Also, mine ALWAYS sticks! It is fairly well finished but polishing may help some. I think the bigger issue is the straight taper not being enough. More taper and probably slight radius to the taper would help.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll get in touch with buckshot. I've never gotten around to tooling up my lathe, otherwise I'd have made a couple already.
