I have now in my possession a H&G bullet mold that drops a 315 grain +/- .512 hollow point bullet. It looks like an oversized .45 auto RN bullet.

It's a Hensley and Gibbs mold from their San Diego days, and is marked simply with the number 3. I can find no reference to this mold. I am no expert though, and I'm sure someone knows more about it than I do.

Any help identifying the design, origin and intended cartridge would be great. From the number, I assume it's an early design, but for what? maybe the Remington RB pistol?

Well, according to a list of H&G moulds that's maintained by a forum member here (I don't know his name on the forum) it says:

#3 - .50 Caliber. 340 grains at 750" length or 400 grains at .900" length. Drawing shows four grease grooves. Round nose, with rounded meplat.

Here's the URL of the list:

Thanks Mike, Not sure how I missed that. This mold only has 2 grease grooves, presumably the .750" length (don't have it in front of me to measure.) And the HP cavity and alloy would make the weight difference between 340 and my 315ish.

NZ,

At your leisure, a picture would be interesting to see. Especially one of the cast boolit. I am looking for a lighter weight HP boolit for my 50-70.

Wow, I'm more than a few days late on this one!

I don't get to cast often, and so I sometimes forget about these things. Being that this is a mold for a caliber I don't own, it means I'm even more prone to forgetfulness.
