My lovely bride gave me just what I wanted for Xmas. A upgrade frame for my Dillon 450 to a 550B. So tonight I cranked out the last 600rds of 38 special and I plan to do the up grade this week.:drinks:

Let us know how it works out, I have my 450 bought in 1982 and have thought of upgrading it.

Gents,

The solid 450 frame is ideal for rifle loading vs the shell head on the 550 style frame which has a tiny bit of wobble to it. No one is complaining about the 550 for rifle so those who own one can put back their knives to slash me. The old 450 frame is far more rigid and offers perhaps a bit more precision in loads and in bullet seating on a progressive style press.

My solution was to keep the 450 for rifle. I bought a 650 for pistol ammo loading but in hind sight, I ought to have bought a 550 for pistol. The 650 is way more capacity in production than I needed and I over shot the mark on the 650 decision. However, with what I have, I think the 450 and 650 are the ideal Dillon solutions to any of my wildest rifle or pistol loading requirements. As said, most ideal would have been 450 and 550.

That all said: I won't upgrade my 450.

I do my rifle loads on a single stage RCBS Rockchucker. I wanted to upgrade the 450 so I could do more pistol rounds. Got the 450 broken down tonight. Them pins were kinda tuff to get out even after a little Kroil oil. Clean up the pins and slap it together tomorrow night before Sons of Guns. LOL!

Well I got it put back together tonight and it works just great!

Question. What type of lube do you use on the ram?

I believe Dillon recommends 30 weight motor oil. I believe their primary concern is not using a lubricant that will seep into the primers and kill them.

I use Rig Gun Grease. I take a swab and pick up the liquid that forms over time in the can of Rig I have and put it on the ram and pivot points. Works like a charm. If your grease does not have any of this separation in it, mix half and half with a gun oil, I had used this also. James

Now thats a sweet wife. The Dillons are great machines.

I use a heavy liquid red fiction reducing lubricant on my 450. Its from MPI and the name of it is Groile.

If anyone ever has any spare parts for a 450 left over from upgrades they will never use again I would be interested. The main item would be the aluminum magazine tube with the turned down end that slides into the primer feed body ring for small primers. Part # RL450-34s in the manual.

Like Iowa Fox, I'm interested in any of the older plastic primer tubes with the brass fitting on the end and a small powder measure bar. If anyone has any lying around unused, and they are serviceable, I'm interested.

I have clicked on this tread twice a day since you started it. Maybe since I posted this, I'll remember you're not talking about a Lyman 450. Why can't I remember! "It's down right kornfusing", as Mr Haney would say. :veryconfu

HI, the manual isn't too clear; mine have a plastic end on the small primer tube. the large one does have a turned down end. is this what you want?

The 2 primer tubes I have are straight and have plastic ends. I don't use the primer tubes on mine as I like to seat mine using a Lee hand primer.

Andrew,
I use white lithium grease in a spray can from Cyclo. Probably at a auto store.

The originals and ones that work in my 450 are all aluminum with no plastic ends.
