View Full Version : Gun Show Gem? or Cull?

I have another post here about a gunshow score, here is another mold from that haul.

I am not so sure it is a gem or not. I do not punch a lot of 38 holes in paper, but the price was right and I was buying a lot of his other stuff....

This seems to be an ideal 38 mold originally, but refurbed or re-poured-drill , machined....

It seems to be a 38 WC with a point on the end. The stamp on the sprue is 38.

But, look at the side...side drilled to hold the brass, right through the Ideal stamp.

It is a little dirty, and never having a brass mold, I am unsure, of how best to clean it up. LOL, there was a cocoon in the mold when I opened it!!!

How should I clean it up, and might anyone know the mold's origins...aka if this was a factory or refurb?

Oh, BTW, I paid 10 bucks for it...

A better representation of it's condition.

Interesting mold, it looks like a re-work to a Himmelwright WC.

stubshaft's correct about it being a Himmelwright design, which is very rare. You got quite a deal for only $10! Take a look at this: http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell-Himmelwright-Wadcutters.htm

Interesting....looking up Himmelwait...I dont want to cast from it, it is dirty, and would like ot know how to clean it up....I figure if I cast with it dirty I may damage it.

Being brass, I would think only a soft brushing , washing is OK. Steel wool, a no no...eh?

Just wash it in hot, soapy water with an old tooth brush then dry it in a warm (200 degree) oven.
A little Bullshop on the sprue plate and away we go. Looks like an interesting mold, though I wonder how well it will work, given the different coefficients of expansion between brass and Iron.

I use denatured alcohol and a tooth brush to clean all of my molds. A nylon tooth brush is the only brush that ever touches my molds.

Ten bucks huh? Are the police looking for you yet? They should be, you stole it.

brass inleted into steel?
and a modified mold at that.
that must have a story in it somewhere.
or someone measured a throat, i'd bet it was a target shooter.

I just read Glenn's Himmelwright story on LASC , thanks for the info..

It seems this is the original WC ....albeit in 38. The orignal caliber was 44 russian.

I love reading about the rich history of our hobby, and having something in hand that fits the story.

Scrub a dub-dub, here I come.....some Christmas Himmelwright Wadcutters coming soon!!!

Sizing them might be a challenge in the Star nose first, I assume...thinking maybe a push-through undersize falsie may be in order, today at least...maybe a custom top punch for base first in a LYMAN leak o matic??? Hmmmmm.....

Here is the original IDEAL 360302 .38 Himmelwright and a clone mold I had Bruce at BRP make for me.

If that aint cool I dont know what is! What was the purpose of the point?

LOL. I think the point is so it looks as cool as Rubber Txxx on a 59 Chevy Bumper!!

No, I don't know but, I am sure Glen F. from LASC would know.

Anyways, I cast a little pile up....went to check 'em....dropping .3575 on the button , soooooo...they just about fell through my .358 die..lol.

Cute, though I think it is a modified Himmelwright, I don't know if the extra thick top band/barrel was on the original designs of his or not.

Anyway, it is neat, and I going to have some fun with them.

Here is a look....not bad for a mold that has probably made umprteen zillion boolits...this was the only 38 mold he had, and he had a lot of brass. Most of the brass was Peters and very well worn.

Sorry, my pics are fuzzy, I cannot get the hang of taking pics with the blackberry.

Man do I miss Bruce's molds, glad I got the ones I could when I could.......nice guy to talk to also, no secrets with him and he was always eager to help....

Besides he was a local to me and I like buying local.....

PS -- To the original poster you stole that mold whatever it may be!!!

The little icon on our camera that looks like a yellow tulip is the macro adjustment... it makes closeups in focus possible. Looks like a great bullet if it really has sharp edges! :D

I have a SC of the 360302, drops a really nice boolit, sharp edges, clean and round. Amazing what the little boolit will do in a 1925+/- vintage S&W Regulation Police, perfect application!!!

Boss, your mould differs in several respects from the Himmelwrights pictured, so it does not necessarily follow that you have an original Himmelwright. It may just look similar. The similarity is certainly not exact compared to the pictures of the real thing.

I stated as much in one of my last posts.

Still nifty.

Boss:

Are there any markings/numbers of any kind on the sides of your mold?

Jerry

Just the Ideal stamp , New Haven, etc.

The Sprue is simply stamped 38 . They drop at 3575 and lube easy in my star without sizing in the 358 die....and they slip right into a clean sized 38 case.

I am quessing here, that the 3575 drop facilitated pan lubing without any sizing at all, maybe, again quessing here, because sizing machines weren't available or popular when this was made.

Anyways, gonna load these up without sizing, shoot 'em in my Colt PolicePositive 38 and chrony them on New Years day. Just for the fun of it. Maybe even try to hit the paper with them in a Smith 27. Lol.

The bullet looks "kinda" like the old IDEAL 360344-S with an added "nose" !
They should cut nice clean holes in paper ! :)
