Can you use this stuff for rifle loads in a Marlin 1894C? (.357 mag lever) Just wondered because I have 12# of SR7641 (4759 clone) that I use for cast boolit loads in a lot of cartridges, but have just put one of those Marlins on layaway. I have a feeling I'll be shooting it a lot, and if the powder works, it would be pretty inexpensive to shoot. I was going to load it behind 180 gr. gaschecked boolits.

Any help?

Yes. If you can't find data for that powder, then start working up with IMR 4227 data.

Since I did this I went to loaddata.com and found a couple recipes for Winchester carbines at about 17 grains or so. If it works and it doesn't dirty the bore too much I'll be in good shape.

Light loads will leave unburned powder in the bore. If this happens, slowly increase the powder charge until it burns cleanly and shoots well. Lighter is not always better.

17 grains sounds a bit heavy to me for a 180 grain cast bullet...I ain't sure, but you maybe should check Hodgdon's data. I'm using 4 grains less then you indicate (SR-4759) and I am getting 1550+ fps (Lyman 358429--170 grains) from an 1894C. Good-luck...BCB

17-18 grains is my accuracy load in a 30-30; 18.5 is maximum. Given the difference in case sizes, 17 sounds way too much for a 357 mag. I'd recommend starting quite a bit lower. Personally I wouldn't stand near you on the line if you were shooting 17. Maybe I'm just chicken.

I double checked the data, and it said to start around 13 grains or so. Must have been thinking of my .356 winchester.

I thing the 1894C is going to be fun.
