Greetings, for all those shooters looking to shoot a Round ball in wad then here are my measurements from a .730" diameter barrel fit, a smooth bore that I check every slug/sabot I load for size by pushing through this 6 inch barrel!
Go to any gunsmith and ask for a cut piece of barrel from his garbage bin for this important safety check before you start loading your own and you will be surprised at what all you will find.
Wad Petal thickness
Fed.12S0 21.5 to 26.5
Fed.12C1 21.5 to 23
Fed.12S3 17 to 19
Fed.12S4 20 to 27
Hor.Versalite25 to 31
Win.AA 21.5 to23 White
Win.12F114 19 to 21
Win.AA Red, I can't get the original ones!
Best fit for .685" dia RB in wad!
1. Fed.12S3 purple wad, nice fit!
2. Win.AA White next best fit!
3. Fed.12C-1 a bit tighter fit!
4. Fed.12S-0 a bit too tight fit!
5. Fed.12S-4 brown, too tight, could be dangerous!
6. Win. 12F114 yellow, too loose for accuracy!
7. Hornady Versalite Red, Too tight, could be dangerous!
**Just in case you are wondering where did I get this .685" RB mold,
that mold was a gift from Sharp Shooters and all I payed was for shipping $5.
What a gentleman he is, can't beat that!
Best fit for .678" dia RB in wad!
1. Fed.12S3 purple wad, loose fit!
2. Win.AA White Ok minus fit!
3. Fed.12C-1 loose fit!
4. Fed.12S-0 a bit tight fit!
5. Fed.12S-4 brown, OK fit!
6. Win. 12F114 yellow, a little loose fit!
7. Hornady Versalite tight, can be dangerios!
* Ideal mold!
Best fit for .690" dia RB in wad, if you to happen to cast them of WW and water quench them like I do,
then you might as well forget that idea of loading them with the above wads as they are too tight for your own safety!!
1. Fed.12S3 purple wad, tight fit!
2. Win.AA White, tight fit!
3. Fed.12C-1, tight fit!
4. Fed.12S-0, tight fit!
5. Fed.12S-4 brown, tight fit!
6. Win. 12F114 yellow, tight fit!
7. Hornady Versalite, tight fit!
* A Lyman mold!
Even tho I have the Lyman .732" RB mold, I am still a fan of, RB in wad design!
Before you start using a RB for hunting be aware of some facts about RB:
A. The sphere is the most difficult geometric form to deform or destroy!
B. If given enough velocity it will deform but only if you hit large bones!
C. If you do not hit solid bones then it has a definite tendency to spread muscle fibers, rather than to cut!
D. A hole made by a round ball in any medium is not one of extreme damage!
E. A round ball hole through a paper target, nearly always you can put the paper edges of the perforation back together, because the ball tears rather than punches a hole and
no paper is actually destroyed or carried away!
F. The RB can be very deadly provided you aim for heavy bones, because it does have the smashing power!
For reference here is the same test with Lyman 525 in wad in a .730 barrel fit, water quenched for add. hardness, Wt. 500 grain!
1. Fed.12S3 purple wad, very good fit!
2. Win.AA White, good fit!
3. Fed.12C-1, loose fit!
4. Fed.12S-0, tight fit!
5. Fed.12S-4 brown, tight fit!
6. Win. 12F114 yellow, loose fit!
7. Hornady Versalite, tight fit could be dangerous!
For reference here is the same test with Lee Drive Key 1oz slug in wad, in a .730 barrel fit, water quenched for add. hardness!
1. Fed.12S3 purple wad, very good fit! Best
2. Win.AA White, a bit loose fit! 3rd Best
3. Fed.12C-1, a bit loose fit! 5th best
4. Fed.12S-0, tight fit!
5. Fed.12S-4 brown, good, a bit tight fit! 2nd Best
6. Win. 12F114 yellow, a bit loose fit! 4th Best
7. Hornady Versalite, tight fit could be dangerous
The above information could be very helpful, to the slug/RB loader!
Guess what I enjoyed doing the test and now this information will come in very handy
next time I even start thinking of doing some loading.
With so many variables, a lot to learn and each day brings about a new challenge!
Wow, that was my last 2 cents, and now I'm all broke!
Safety first,trust but verify!
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!
