I believe that is what is called the Mauser A case head. Several of the 19th century cases were shaped like that. Why? I have no idea.

Rick ,Were those loaded with black ,in the day?

I had a box of them that were 43 mauser BP rounds and the case heads split from the primer pocket to the edge of the rim , they were factory stuff.I didnt like that because when they were shot in a roller they spit out the top pretty bad.

Dean;

If I recall correctly, you could get either BP or Smokeless. I have to dig thru my box of loose bullets and pull one apart to see what it's loaded with.

Domonion Ammo was notorious for splitting cases. Seems like their brass was extremely brittle............all over! I've seen lots of them split up the neck and in some cases down to the rim, but never from the primer pocket outwards.

I wonder if the chamber on that Roller wasn't way out of spec.

Seasons Greetings.

no way the chamber could of been bad !! for crying out loud it was 160 years old ,
That was my impression of the brass,it was real brittle ,
but loaded like it was I felt it prudent not to anneal it, and by the time it was rendered safe by firing it was too late ,

hey MERRY CHRISTMAS , and if you see santa send him by , he probably cannot find me down here with no snow to foller my tracks with.

Dominion goes back a very long way.
They first loaded the 43 Mauser ammo with black powder and used Mercuric primers.
The mercury in the primers is what made the fired brass brittle.
But chances are, those cases were smokeless loads with standard corrosive primers.
I would anneal the cases from the shoulder to the caes mouth, and then reload them with a mild smokeless load.
28 to 30 grains of Accurate Arms 5744 powder under the cast Lyman .466 diameter 350 grain bullet works very well.

Japlmg, do you mean .446"? This is the size of the boolit that Lyman sells the mold for the 43 Mauser. Unless you are using a different boolit due to bore size.
I have this mold and while the boolit shoots well, the Lee 300gr RFN sized to .450" and gas checked does better in my rifle.

Bertram makes brass for the 43. I bought it thru Graf & Sons. I saw a post where 45-90 was refomed for this rifle but this is not really much cheaper than the Bertram.

20grs of 2400 or SR4759 also works well.

This is a neat ctg. I have two of the rifles, 71/84's, one military, and one sporter. This is what I shot a moose with this fall. I use a paper patch pure lead bullet, and size .447 for mine. It's a great round, and the Dominian brass is very good. There was some one who made up cast cases with there name on them, and they were not good quality. If you need some help in reloading information call on me. Be glad to help. The toolman.

Yes, I met .446 diameter.
By the way, if any of you reload for the Japanese 11mm Murata, that Lyman .446 Diameter 350 grain bullet works great for the Murata.

StrawHat,
great link i just read it ,,,thanks.
i have plenty of 45-70 brass on hand but everyone tells me it runs short when formed, and buying 45-90 will be almost as expensive as buying formed 43 brass,
i think alot of ot is formed from a 348 win parent case (348 ?).
i have slugged the barrel which is in good shape and if i'm reading my micrometer right its at 446 +/-.
i think will send to an e-mail at Accurate molds and get him to chisle me one up .
there is also a discusion here on a NOE 43 mauser g/b ,hope it gets enougth interest to get it on the schedule.
the cheapest brass i can find is Huntingtons selling Bertrum for $53 something for 20.
my rifle will not be a weekly shooter ,more like twice a year just to keep the spiders out of it so $50--$60 for 20 would prolly last me the rest of my life [smilie=l:
have a safe and groovy new year folks........:bigsmyl2::evil:

To make it easier for the extractor claw to snap over the rim as the Model 71 did not feed from a trough below the bolt.

Adrians,
I shoot 2 of the 43 Mausers and have tried all sorts of combinations.
The best I have found is the Lyman .446 boolit ,Lyman mold 446110 at 340-350 grains
I have Bertram brass and I have 45/90 brass.
The 45/90 is about $1.09 per case from Grafs (starline brass) and the Bertram when they have it is about $3-4 each.
I Made a couple of custom rifles using Martini actions and Mauser barrels and the 45/90 brass works great in them.
My favorite load is 70 grains Goex FFG a card wad and the 340 grain Lyman boolit.
for PP I use a 43 Spanish boolit patched to .446 and 65 grains of Goex FFG , a quarter inch grease cookie between 2 card wads. I reduce the charge to allow for the grease cookie as I do not like to compress BP in a bottleneck case even tho the 43 Mauser case has a very small bottle neck
