I need one for the 300 Fireball, and I'm wondering if I can use the 30 Carbine model, or the short model. The Fireball case is .065" longer than the carbine, which should work, unless the body isn't fat enough to swallow the case body. The short M die is described for being used only with 30-30, 300 Savage, and 7.62x39. I'm stumped. If I have to, I'll mail a case or two out to someone who could determine this for me. Thank you fellas!

Respectfully,

Kevin

This link will send you to a page with enough information to pick out exactly what you need:

So I see that for the 221 Fireball that they are using the short die. I'm pretty sure this would carry over to the 30 caliber version, but I can't be certain. Hmmmmm.....

Well that clears up any confusion. I noticed that he listed the M2 as the short in the description up top, and then listed it as the long in the table down below. OOPS! It looks like I'll just be able, according to the article, to use the short for everything. Good to know!

Thanks Dave, for posting that link. It was most helpful!

If the case is shorter than a .30-30 case, get the short, M-1 die. I use the long, M-2 die for the .30-30, but both the die body and expander stem are close to their thread limits.

Also, the 31R expander plug works the best with cast. Use the 30R plug for jacketed.

The crossover point between the short die and the long die is about the length of the 30-30 or 308 Win. The cases that are shorter than these use the short die and the longer cases use the long die. However, many use the short die with longer cases by screwing it out of the press a little bit. If this works for you, you have just saved yourself the cost of the long die.
