I have recently aquired a large frame Dan Wesson revolver chambered in .45 Colt. It has a 6" heavy vented barrel, stainless finish, adjustable rear sight, and is stamped Monson, Mass. I have an idea of what it might be but I am not for sure. It looks like it might be a model 745 but there are no identifiers on the gun itself. I have the box but it is useless as far as information is concerned. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Serial number is 45S0010XX

Here's one of many articles I found on google.

That is a VERY desirable piece.

Don't let anyone cheat you out of it.

Well, except, maybe, me?

Merry Christmas.

the number says its a 45 stainless but not the vented or other than standard sighted.
i'm guessing 6" bbl as that was the standard length.
great target guns when set up properly.
that would look nice between my stainless vented & [ported] 445 and my blued vented target sighted 375 supermag, or under the blued 357 vented max.
or maybe next to the 357 and below the 22.
probably above the stainless 44 then i could move the blued 4" bbl'd one down.
but i'd have to take the 10" bbl off the stainless one to get things to line up.

anyways,, get the proper tension on the shroud, and the correct bbl gap, and right trigger tension
with a set of pachmeyer grips and you'll love the thing.
if you are interested in selling it let me know, or have a 25-20 version,or a 414....

That is a fire arm I would dearly love to have. Love my Monson DW in 41. That would be the cats pajamas. Let me know if you want to get rid of it

I hemmed and hawed and missed one here locally a few months ago. 8", blued. Didn't need it but I sure wanted it!

Thanks for the info guys. And for those of you who are drooling I apologize but I got this DW from my dad so I will not be getting rid of it. I am slowly working on getting his whole collection. I traded a Uberti .45 for it and he traded a cheapo muzzle loader pistol for it. Hes no dummy but really liked the one I traded him. Also, does anyone have any idea where to find other barrels in .45? I have found them for every other DW except mine :(

Howdy Crazy
I am another DW shooter. $5 Colt is one of the rare ones. Ususally sell for $700 and up in good condition. Another of those DW´s I regret not having been in the right place to get one. Run all of mine with a .0015 barrel gap and good barrel nut tension.
One day I will come across an ugly 44 mag and turn it into a 45 Colt.
You have one fine 45 Colt to enjoy and pass on one day.

Thanks Missionary1550. I am learning the hard way how rare this DW is. I cant find anything for it. There is a lot of .357, .44, and other caliber stuff out there but nothing in 45. If I could get my hands on a 8-10 inch barrel I would be very happy. Happier if I could find it in 12-15. Also, by the looks of it, this thing hasnt been fired. My dad had it for years and never shot it. Ive been wanting to hit the range but havent had the time.

With the DW any large frame barrel shroud will work on your basic frame. I use a 44 mag 4" on my 41 mag frame but with a 41 mag barrel. So for just a shooter all you need to do is get the barrel plus a common 44 shroud of the length you want.
But if you want to put together a "pistol pack" you are really gonna need lots of patience and very deep pockets. Over at the Dan Wesson Forum there are fellers who can probably point you into the directions to find these rare items. There is a serial # info area that may help you know the date of manufacture. Also someone there will know about how few of these were made. Probably falls into a few less than the 41 mag or about the same.
Well made and very accurate.

"the number says its a 45 stainless but not the vented or other than standard sighted."

The serial number on the frame has nothing to do with barrel length, weight, vent, porting or comped.

Wow. Ok. So I just need to find the actual barrel then. I didnt know that. Well the shroud shouldnt be a problem Ive found a lot of those. Now to locate a barrel. Thanks.

You can always have one made.
It's just a blank turned down and threaded at both ends.
Cut a forcing cone and crown.
I bet there is a wiz in here who does such things

Good Morning
I have had our John Taylor make some DW barrels for me. His work is excelllent and the turn around time was good. Competitive prices. The 414 SM barrel he made was the 1st barrel I have owned that was slick as glass.

How do I get ahold of Mr. John Taylor? I would love to get a barrel made.
