I had my hands or a 44 mag. Ruger Alaskan yesterday. Don't know why but I think I need one. Anybody shot one?

I own the .44mag version of the Alaskan. Very manageable snubbie. Get one!

What do you use it for?

Yes, a friend has an Alaskan in 44 mag and also one in 454. Either is awesome. I'd go for the 454 and be ready for anything.

All things considered two more inches of barrel does not get in the way.
Actually four more inches does not get in the way .

I usually carry it whenever I'm in the woods hunting.

I f the shop is open today I'm going to go look at it again. I have a SRH 7.5. Don't need this thing but we'll see what happens.

I have a 3" S&W 629 classic and its not that bad to shoot with full loads with bullets in the 200 to 240 gr range . i imagen 300 grainers would kick it up a notch or two but im used to shooting a FA 6" 454 casull

I had a 454 alaskan and thought it was the easiest shooting 454 i had ever owned or shot. I would guess that the 44 mag is a puppy dog. It has a much better grip then my 4 inch redhawk which can get on you with heavy bullet loads.

Wonder what kind of speed you get from a barrel that short?

I tend to lean toward 4" barrels. Unless you want it to fit in a pocket, you can carry a 4" as well as (usually better than) a shorter barrel.

If it's what you want, get it! They look wicked.

I tested full house 265 RD's with H110 and only lost 200fps vs my 7.5 inch Redhawk. A reasonable tradeoff, IMO.

Most of the time I shoot mine with 10 grains of Unique and 200 grain Lee RNFP's. It's rather mild with that load. :)

I do believe that the purpose of the Alaskan is for p/d
I found this on another site

Only thing ill say about the 44 is that the alaskan is still a chunky gun. Its a bit heavy for consealed carry and if all you want is full power 44 mag loads a smith 4inch gun is probably lighter more accurate and no harder to conseal of carrry in a hip holster. Kind of why i got rid of my 454. It didnt do anything any better then my 4 5/8s FA 454 and the FA gun shot as well at 50 yards as the alaskan did at 25.

I loaded some up some 300gr WFN GC Bear Tooth Bullets for my Alaskan. I put those on top of 13.0gr HS-6, yields right at 1,000fps, fun gun to shoot!

I brought it home shot it 18 times. 6-18 gr 2400. 6-10 Unique those two loads were the Lee 240 SWC GC. Then 23 gr. H110 Hornady 240 XTP. That one had a muzzle flash and a half. I can't believe with that short a barrel the slow powders are the thing to use. Going to chronograph now.

Congrats on the new gun. You'll want a faster powder to minimize muzzle flash with the shorter barrel.

Just back from shooting.

240 LEE SWC GC 10 gr. Unique 1080 FPS out of the Alaskan. 1200 FPS out of the SRH 7.5.

240 LEE SWC GC 18 Gr. 2400 1137 FPS out of Alaskan. 1360 FPS from 7.5.

240 XTP 23 Gr. H110 1074 FPS not sure what it does in the 7.5.
The Alaskan shoots the 2400 and 110 well but didn't seem to like the Unique. And that's the powder I thought would be the best for it. I understand the 110 load was the only full house load I shot but it's really not that bad with the recoil

My "alaskanized" SRH does at least a couple of things better than my FA83: it's snubby barrel stays hidden behind above the hem of a vest, heavy sweater, or light jacket much better than the 4 5/8ths FA, and holds 6 in perfect safety. It's on my belt (a nice stiff gunbelt that fits jeans loops) right now, and has become my cool/cold weather EDC.

How long is the barrel of your "Alaskanized" SRH?

Barrel is about 1/32" longer than the shroud; dovetail front sight with narrow white line, sharp edges on the hammer spur a little "melted," trigger smoothed but with stock springs, and the grip I use is the one from the 3" GP100 (pretty compact) with mesquite inserts. I've had it on for 7 hours so far today, no discomfort. Now for a potentially embarrassing disclosure: I like nylon holsters for concealment! They're relatively thin, they conform to me, and they DON'T SQUEAK-I hate squeaking holsters; the SRH rides crossdraw in a WRB thumbreak holster made for the Alaskan and S&W X-frame. Great concealment for me (a necessity in my work life), relatively fast, and six 300gr CorBons on tap in controllable format. YMMV

What work do you do? Post some pics of your Alaskan please.
