Is anyone here using SR4759 in the 357 Max with the 358627?

I'm thinking about starting at 15 gr and working up unless you fellows say it is not a good powder for mild, accurate, 357 Max loads.

I would be very interested in learning your results. I use 4759 in a wide variety of cartridges, not the 357 Max but only because I don't have one. It won't be the high velocity winner but I have worked up mild, accurate loads in cartridges from 30 Carbine to 308 and many in between, it's a great powder.

Let us know how this works for you. Curious minds want to know.

If 358627 is the heavy weight SWC, I would try it. I'm getting good results with 4759 in the 444 with a 345 grain boolit at about 1600 fps.

Likely too bulky for the case and the 358627 takes up even more capacity. It will definetly go bang, but the lack of a serious charge weight will never get pressure into the proper range so accuracy is realized.

Lyman #3 lists it for 358429 in the 357 Mag, so it might well work out very well in the Max.

357 Mag 4" barrel
SR4759
CCI500
358429 1.553" OAL

9.8 gr 942 fps
13.5 gr 1206 fps 40,600 CUP (compressed)

Lee shows a case capacity of 1.15 for the mag and 1.79 for the Max. Playing with the numbers I come up with load data comparable to what I use with H110. I have no feel for comparing H110 and 4759 loads in any cartridge.

Most TC barrels have a throat that will allow a boolit to be seated long (if the cartridge handling mechanism can handle the extra length) so at least in the single shots, it may be a real performer.

Thanks Guys and thanks TCLouis for the Lyman data. I'm gonna put a few together and give them a try. Just mainly looking for some light loads, accuracy would be a big plus. Might be a while before I get to the range to try them.

A bit late, but............

Carlton Shy Jr's book "Cast Bullets and Silhouettes" lists 18.5 gns of SR4579 with the Lyman 358627, velocity about 1330 fps.

I had great success with 352627 and .357 Max and Unique for light loads. Serious hunting loads went with large charges of RL7 or 4227. Both options were hell on deer out to a couple hundred yards. Have fun! What kind of gun is it chambered in? Mine was an Encore barrel, NEVER should have traded it...

I will be shooting these in my 20" Bullberry Contender barrel. I also have a 14" factory barrel but will be using the 20 to work up the loads.
