View Full Version : Shooting the 7.5x55mm with LFN Bullets

All loading data I can find for the 7.5x55mm is jacket bullets. I would like to try some lead FN bullets ... RCBS 80-180-FN, GC weighing 190grs.
Anyone shooting LFN reloads in their K-31 rifles?

I did some testing with 247 grain round nose lead here:

The results were pretty good for starting out.

No, but I did try out some 311413s which are a 169 spire point. You can use .308 Win
data for cast and get pretty much the same velocities.

I have started to use the 311644 Lyman design in a Swiss 96/11. It is 190 gr nominal weight tapered boolit. Cast boolit data for 308 Win from the lyman books seems to be a good place to start.

Yeah, I've shot a fair number of cast from my K31s. If you have AA5744 start at 20-21gr and work up. If you want to go faster, try H322 around 24gr and work up.

21-22gr AA5744 seems like a good load for boolits in the 175-200gr range, but fast enough to remain accurate to 500m or so.

My higher velocity load is ~30gr H322 under a 200gr 311644. Its a ram killer.

I had very good results with the Lee pointy boolit designed for the SKS and AK. Sized to .309", loaded over IMR4895 to 2000 fps it was incredibly accurate and fit well with the K31's very short throat.

Gentlemen - thanks kindly for your quick posts and information. Almost as good as getting on the telephone and calling around
I totally forgot that in the back of the cabinet I have a unused Ideal 311413,169gr GC mold! Per the 1949 Ideal Handbook, it says: "The Squibb gas-check bullet for the Springfield and other 30-06 rifles. Perhaps the most accurate gas-check bullet yet produced. Excellent for target practice up to 600 yards... Powder charge 16grs Du Pont No. 4759, or 23 grains Hercules Lightning powder."

I currently use the Berger 190gr VLD with 47.5gr IMR 4350 seated into the lands for long distance out to 1000yds. The 311413 is 0.40 shorter and less weight. Should be interesting!

I'll cast up some 311413's and compare the accuracy with the RCBS FN bullet for military class matches
Thank you again for all your posts and information.
Merry Christmas to All and the Best New Year

I have used the Lyman 30-30 bullet with great results in my K31. My best groups were hovering right aroound an inch with this bullet and W/W 748 powder. This was with a Weaver K4 scope in a St. Marie side mount. I do use a hard lube (Carnuba Red) as the g/c is just below the neck of the case.

I've had pretty good luck with the 311413 in the K31 at low velocities.

8-9 Red Dot
14-16 SR4759

These loads are surprisingly accurate.

The throat on new-ish K31 barrels can be intollerant of bullets with big noses. I've been using clones of the RCBSSilhouette 165 and 180gr bullets with about 20 grains of 4198, with great results. These are gas check designs. Groups have been about 3 inches at both 100 and 200 yards through a worn bore.
