I have a Winchester 30-30 model 66 made in 1966' long octagon heavy barrel yellow receiver, first time gun was ever fired was by me. Casting a Lyman 311291, 175 grain, COL= 2.52", brass was trimmed per spec.'s. The issue is the bullet is tight in the chamber before the breach is closed by about 1/8". I verified the brass is not the issue and goes freely in and out before seating the bullet. The lead bullet is .300" diameter on the top of bullet before lube grooves and has marks in about four different places about a 1/4" to 3/8" from the front of bullet. I hand checked various bullets and the chamber is leaving marks on the bullet and is hard to remove by hand. Was the chamber never reamed/drilled per correct size. I have checked the same ammo in other 30-30 guns and no problem. What are my options?

This is not uncommon for that bullet. The nose is a bore rider type and if your rifle has a tight bore or you mold cast fat with the alloy you are using this happens. It is one reason I quite using that bullet in a 30-30 as too many were fat for the bore of my rifle. I now use a 311041 which was made for the 30-30

As Nick indicated, your bore is just a bit smaller than the bore riding portion of the bullet.

What alloy are you using?

Ok so I bought a Lyman 311041 and still the same problem the last 1/16" just is tight to close chamber even if I decrease the over all length, I did try jacketed and they do work. Any ideas to use cast?
