Exactly 3". That's longer than needed for this cartridge but I sure like mine. Just sold my Smith .500 and am keeping the BFR........It's more gun in my opinion.

doghawg - I like that vote for the BFR over the Smith. I like the 475/480 BFR I bought.

Recoil isn't near as bad as I thunk it would be.

Still have a lot more playing to do with it.

I was worried about the distance the boolit has to go in my 45-70 BFR before hitting the forcing cone. When you look down the throat, the boolit is WAY down there.
I have shot to 1800 fps and had cloverleafs at 50 yd's. (300 gr Hornady.) I get close to matching it with cast. It is one of the most accurate guns I have. I also had 3 shots within 2" at 500 yards once. This one has made me re-think the boolit close to the forcing cone idea.
I always followed those who said the boolit has to be right at the end of the cylinder for a little, short jump.
I guess Magnum Research found out it is a lot of hot air. I love the idea that the BFR's will take any boolit you can find. I have not found a limit yet.
I have the .475 too and these are 2 guns I will never part with.
