What are the preferred bullet molds for paper patching? Gas checked or plain base?

I would suggest that if you happen to have a GC mold to try it. The boolit has a 'rebate' which might prevent boolit base distortion or edge feathering as it swages into the rifling. Paper patched boolits are large so undergo a fair amount of compression as they pass through the throat.

Speaking strictly of smokeless powder cartridges and boolits, either will work just fine in my experience. The only significant difference that I can tell is that a GC base makes it a bit easier to twist the tail of the patch without tearing the paper, especially if you've sized the boolit down a significant amount before wrapping and there is some flashing on the base edge.

Makes no difference. If you use a checked bullet you do NOT need the check.
