View Full Version : PP in 45 Shiloh - what mould

I have two Shiloh 45 caliber rifles with standard dimension chambers and I want to try shooting some paper patch boolits in them. (45-70 and 45-90)

The eventual goal would be hunting rather than target.

Anyone want to recommend something in a boolit mould?

Thanks for your ideas.

I'ld get ahold of Brooks or Old West and get one of their .441 diameter bullets with the traditional Sharps nose profile. For heavier game I'ld take the length up to around 1.35, for smaller stuff run the length to 1.1. Roll it in 9# onion skin paper, and load it atop a case full of powder a fiber wad/greasecooke or lubed felt wad /another fiber wad, with the base of the bullet into the resized case about .2.

Good catch there Chuck!

I've only ever had the opportunity to try some PP cast from a borrowed Tom Ballard tapered mould. They worked great in my Ruger #1 over BP, but the recoil was ridiculous. (heavy boolit and light rifle)

Thanks guys, and yes I did notice Ricks moulds - I already have a couple of sets of his handles so I know he makes good stuff. His adjustable mould looks real interesting - especially so for someone undecided on a bullet weight.

I am also a customer of Steve Brooks and shoot GG boolits from his mould in my 50-70 and have a PP mould from him for my 50-90.

I guess that the information I was looking for here was some pointers on bullet diameter, bullet weight, and nose and base style for the standard Shiloh chamber.

Ward what I posted earlier works well in my standard shiloh 45-70 chamber.

Evening Gents - cruising through some old threads and continued reading this one. RRR is not the only one that makes PP molds, fixed or adjustable weight.

+1 with don about the accurate moulds. i have 4 moulds from them and three are brass...they all throw exactly what i asked for. these are not the only great moulds out there but i defy anybody to present another mould of this quality for a lesser price.

also if you are gonna patch to groove diameter for a 45 cal rifle then the .452 mould of RCBS is hard to beat with a hollow base and my mix casts 540 grain slicks from it. mine is a great mould.

Thanks John, might have to see if he would make that bullet in a .432 or .435 adjustable for the 44, keeping the length to no more than 1.4.
Looks like that would also make a good 45-70 bullet in a .442 diameter and 1.4 maximum length.

Dollar for Dollar and a fine Quality mould Buffalo Arms makes a very good mould.
