Hello Folks,

What can you tell me about the relative quality and accuracy of Pedersoli rolling block rifles? I'm considering the Silhouette, #1 Sporting Rifle, and the Super Match, all in 45-70.

Thanks, Tom

I have the Pedersoli Sharps Creedmor, and it is just as accurate as the Shilo's and C Sharps rifles around me on the line. I get lots of compliments on it too. Sure - it's not made in the U.S. but I think CNC machining has leveled the playing field quality-wise, and it has just as good fit and finish of rifles costing twice as much. I don't like the Pedersoli soule sights though - they came right off in favor of MVA. Much better quality there, and no backlash.

I just bought this little beauty last week..........Made in 1970 and is 45-70. Came with this Tasco Period scope and Soule tang sight and windage adjustable front sight.

Sure wish it had a pistol grip........I might change the but stock at some time. This particular rifle is incredibly accurate. Without load development I shot under 3" at 200 yards for three , 5 shot groups with a sandbag rest.

It now completes my collection of "The Three Kings"

1885 Winchester Hi-Wall
1871 Remington Rolling Block

I see what might be an MVA "Rough and Ready" rear sight on the barrel too. Does anybody know if that particular barrel-mounted sight will fit on the Pedersoli rolling block rifles?

I'm not up-to-date on Pedersoli's latest model designations but my older .45-70 roller has a 30" half-round barrel, all color case-hardened furniture, and pretty decent straight-grained wood. It was (lightly) used when I bought it and, after replacing the original owner's aftermarket tang sight with a Lee Shaver Soule, I get consistent sub-2" 100-yd groups shooting off cross-sticks.

Hi Roy,

Aren't there four kings, to include the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor? Hmmm. I hope you don't have to buy another rifle. :-)

Take care, Tom

Being Christmas and all I thought Three Kings was more fitting!

But yes, there are in fact four Kings..............

I have 5 Sharps, a hiwall and 2 muzzleloaders, all Pedersoli and can't fault the quality of any of them.

Hi Folks,

While I've pretty well decided on the Pedersoli Silhouette Rolling Block rifle in 45-70, I don't like the rear sight and I don't care for ladder-type tang-mounted aperture sights. A high quality barrel-mounted open sight would be an improvement, and I've been looking at the MVA "Rough and Ready" rear sight. However, I'd like to find others to compare. Do you know of any?

If I go to a tang sight, I'm inclined to get a Marbles or Lyman hunting sight. Do you know if either makes a sight with hole spacing that will match the Pedersoli?

Pedersoli makes a "Lolli-pop" rear sight. Will it fit the Rolling Block?

Thanks for your help.

Take care, Tom

any idea what you are mostly going to use the rifle for ? .. if mainly hunting its awful hard to go wrong with a buckhorn sight

Yes, hunting, but I do not like the spring and elevator style of sights.

If it were me, I'd get the MVA - the Rough & Ready makes a great hunting sight without all the complication that a Soule sight offers.
Now if you are going to shoot silhouette matches with it, get the windage adjustable Soule sight for sure or you will be in for serious aggravation.

Since you have settled on the Silhouette, I went looking at that one (on the Pedersoli website).
The rear barrel sight is in a dovetail, and I would bet it is a 3/8ths dovetail.
There is no evidence of any tapped holes in the top surface of the barrel, so the best thing you can do is contact MVA about what it takes to mount their Rough-n-Ready.

As to other sources, Buffalo Arms carries various types.

The Smith sights use dovetails ...

Hi Charlie,

The Smith sights look like just the thing. As you say, and as they appear in the photos, there seems to be no screw hole to drill and tap.

Thank you.

Take care, Tom

A little article I wrote about the Smith ladder sight

The Pedersolis are excellent and very accurate. You will waste a lot of accuracy potential if you use a barrel mounted sight.

+1 For EDG I have a Pedersoli Remington Rolling Block and I took the barrel mounted sight off it was just in the way. I have the Pedersoli Tang sight and globe front site that came with the gun and it shoots great the tang site is fully adjustiable.

A near sighted polish welder and I would go shooting every couple weekends, his rifle is a pedersoli rolling block, with MVA sights in 45-70, his front sight is mounted backwards with a 28 inch barrel.

Mine is a Shiloh sharps with MVA sights also in 45-70, my front sight's installed "correctly" on a 32 inch barrel.

Quality and cosmetics wont match my shiloh, but he outshoots me more often then not.

I have owned several Pedersoli Rolling blocks and they are good accurate rifles. I still own one of them in 30-30 that I really like. I had a creadmore model several years ago and it was a good rifle as well. My only issue is that I am really not a Rolling block lover so I mostly shoot Sharps type rifles and Winchester High Wall type rifles. I do own two Pedersoli 1874 Sharps rifles both in 45-70 that I like and they shoot very well for me.

I've had 2 older ones made in the 70's.The first one shot really bad..459 bullets tumbled at 100.The groove was .457 at some point and .460 at the muzzle.Traded that one off.The next one was .462 x .444.It was heavily leaded.Wouldn't chamber anything heavier then 300 grs.Had it throated for Lyman 457125.They had rifling marks all the way to the nose of the bullet. Not much under 4 inches at 100.I had that one rebarreled with a Green Mountain barrel. Now it shoots under 3" at 300.Have had the chance to shoot any farther yet.I need a MVA sight before I try BPCR silhouette.

I have one in 45/70. I have nothing but good to say about it. In regards to sights call Lee Shaver. He knows these guns and he will get you set up. That is what I did, like they say, do it once, do it right.

You could add a pistol grip like they did on the Trapdoor Target and Officers Models.

there is a place called "rolling block parts" and they offer a pistol grip rear stock and the piece to add to the bottom tang that will coincide with the pistol grip profile...i believe they also sell the bottom spring plate/tang that is already profiled for the new grip profile.
