Has anyone tried a really fine grade of ground corn cob for tumbling their brass? I have used 1/8" corn cob when I get the itch for polished brass but now have found a source for cheap cob in 14/20 grit size. This works out to .0551" to .0236" in size, about 1/4 to 1/2 the size of the 1/8" cob. Was wondering if too fine would be a problem Can get this stuff for about $.50 per pound in bulk. Thanks for any thoughts on the idea, Tom.

P.S. Was thinking this stuff may not stick in the flash holes as readily.

If itīs to fine itīll grind itself up to fast and you need more. Also you could try with rice, sound weird but works, doesnīt get that shiny but gets the job done and doesnīt stick in the flash hole.Thatī`s my 2 cents worth.

If you use Minute Rice, you'll only have to run your tumbler for sixty seconds.

tomf52,
I got 100lbs of the same stuff for the same reason. I have had no problems at all with it.

Quick grits are faster than minute rice.

Many years ago, for not too much money, I bought a couple of 25# bags of the best corn cob media I have ever seen. I got it from Gil Hebard. It is "corned", it actually looks like little molded grains. Extremely even and lasts MUCH longer than conventional corn cob media. Really good stuff. I still have some of it left. I bought a lot because I was doing LOTS of big bore shooting and cleaning LOTS of cases. Also, as I remember, I got a break on the shipping by buying so much. It lasted far longer than I anticipated.

As I said, REALLY good stuff (I have the large Dillon Vibratory Tumbler).

A few years back I stumbled onto a bag of very fine cob media marketed for "sand" blasting log homes. It is a bit coarser than table salt but not much. It pours like sand, cleans good and doesn't clog flash holes. It is a bit slower working than a more coarse media but I love it because it is so easy to use.

I toss a square of paper towel into the tumbler from time to time to clean the media. The super fine dirty, dark tumbling residue gets clogged in the tissue and can be tossed away so a bowl of my media lasts a long time.
