It's the sight for use when launching/firing rifle grenades. The round disk attaches to the side of the rifle as per the instructions (shown). The sight attaches to the round disk. Of course the muzzle adapter was necessary and the rifle grenades came with special cartridges that were similar to blanks.

And they may have been more 'combat' accurate and durable than the pathetic Iron sights issued on the 03 rifles !.

Grenade firing blanks have a pie-crimped case mouth, standard blanks have a lacquered cardboard wad roll crimped into the case mouth. I'm told recoil when firing a rifle grenade was pretty fierce. Anybody here ever do that?

Contrary to the movies that wasn't the intended way to fire them, at least not very often:sad: They were meant to be fired with the butt on the ground, the left hand olding them out and the right hand holding the stock wrist and pulling the triger. That's why the auxillery sight; set the range, level the bubble, aim at the target and pull the trigger.

Sort of like a mortor without the base place. When used correctly the M1903/M1903A1 with the sight was very effective with short range indirect fire using the rilfe grenades. When fired from the shoulder....it was pretty much just painful....to the shooter..........

I've not shot the M1903/M1903A1 with rifle grenades but I have fired many with the M14 using the same grenades and sight.......much preferable with the butt of the rifle on the ground:bigsmyl2:

Yep.. As usual Larry is correct. The rifle butt was on the ground and not the shoulder. The Army training taught there was a chance you could do serious damage to your shoulder, if you shoulder fired a Garand with a rifle grenade attached.
