Just went out back and shot the 1873 that I just finished restoring. It was on this forum a couple of months back. I found a barrel blank, turned and tapered it, chambered it and cut the dovetails. Milled the slot for the mag tube, and had to hand make the barrel band. I used the origional stock, had to fix a few places, made a replacement forarm. Cleaned off all the rust pitting, and hard knocks the old girl had taken in her first 100 years, (it was a lot). Then engraved the action, and rust blued her. I didn't try to make a new gun out of it, just tried to use all of the origional parts that I could. Had to machine a half link for one side, the one was cracked. Just shot it out in my field at my bullet trap. Danged if the sights wern't right on! Ran about thirty rounds through her, with never a hickup! This will be a fun gun to shoot anything with. As old as it is there always seems to be quite a few parts available.

Stories such as yours make me regret that I dropped out of Machinist School at the end of my second year. I so much wish that I had stayed and learned about the proper use of the Lathe and milling machines. Congrats on your project Sir Later David

I'm sorry for the no pictures, my computer or my skill's on the computer don't seem compatable with posting pictures. My almost 70 year old brain can't seem to get into the modern age. That's probably why I like the old guns. I've restored two of the 73's from pure junk in the last couple of years. There a neat gun to shoot! Sort of like a big 22 with a lot more bite. If someone want's to post them for me, I can send pictures, just can't seem to get them to post. I think it is my computer incompatably. Best regards, the toolman.

Dittos all around and good job!
While I'm not a big fan of engraving, that is well done. I have much admiration for those who can. At most, I can cobble some silver or brass inlay into a stock now and then.... but quality metal engraving is another story and a skill well beyond me.

My goodness!! That is very nice work. How did you learn to engrave? I presume that you
must have been paid to do this work at some time to get this good.

Very beautiful, thank you so much for sharing.

Bill, no I just wanted to learn to engrave most of my life. Made most of my own tools over the years. Just practised on my own guns, if you stick with it for 30 or 40 years you can actually see some progress. The toolman

Well, it sure looks like you have it figured out! You can be rightly proud of the work you
did on that rifle.

Just out of curiousity, do you use a little hammer or push the cutter with your hand? It seems
like I have seen guys using both methods.
