A coworker of mine found a like new Single-Six cylinder on a power line right of way.

This cylinder is not marked .22 LR or .22 magnum, so how does one tell for which cartridge it is chambered?

The best marker in the world is the chamber itself. Therefore, use different ammo until headspace is zero. ... felix

If all else fails, I'll have to find someone who can loan me a .22 magnum cartridge.

I once fired a cylinder full of long rifles in a magnum cylinder. They come out with A rimless profile, they look like a .23 ACP. Not recomending it mind you....but you would have no trouble telling if that weasel the case.

I have an 200th year Single Six convertible and on mine it's easy to tell them apart. The .22 magnum cylinder has full counterbores for the cartridge rims - the .22 LR cylinder does not. I don't know if they're all that way, but that's how they made 'em in 1976.

My SS's Magnum cylinder is unfluted and clearly labeled. The LR cyl is fluted and unmarked.

+1 - If it is unfluted it is a Magnum cylinder and usually has a roll engraving indicating the caliber.

The .22 LR cylinder will also be a straight bore through, where the .22 magnum will have a defined chamber with smaller throats.

My OM Ruger SS magnum cylinder is fluted.

The outside dimension is larger on the 22 mag. as the bore riding part bullet is inside the case. The 22 LR has an outside the case bore riding section and is outside lubed.

If you look down the chamber and you don't see a throat / shoulder to it, then it is 22 LR. 22 Mag should have a very visible shoulder, but 22 LR being a healed bullet doesn't.

What revolvergeek said. Ruger did make some fluted un marked cylinders in .22mag. I had one. Inside of chamber will tell the truth.

In the early seventies, the new Model Single-Six Ruger .22 came with two fluted cylinders. The .22LR cylinder has an interior ring.
