Hi everyone,
I have been lingering here for a year or so, picked up a lot of good information. Wanted to say thanks for everyones knowledge, anyway I have a question.
I have a Shiloh 45-2 7/8 with a 34" barrel and a case of Goex ffg. I have been working up loads with a Brooks adjustable mould. Here is my start load data:

45-110 Norma brass from Shiloh, fire formed and trimmed to 2.875
CCI BR large rifle primer
started with 100gr Goex FFg
Dropped through 24" tube .450 below case mouth
no compression
.030 poly wad
.190 grease cookie (spg lube)
.030 veggie wad
565gr bullet, .442 dia Dry wrapped with 9# onionskin 25% rag from Fox River paper co.
finished dia .449
finger seated .20 in the case with a slight taper crimp.
Col 4.180

From there I just added 1 grain of powder at a time just more compression, 104 grains with .330 compression gave me real good accuracy about 1/2" at 100 yards(off the bench). In warmer temperatures I can shoot 4 or 5 rounds before I have to blow tube to chamber the next round. But when I was hunting this fall temperatures were in the teens and 20's I was lucky to get 2nd round chambered. Good thing I didn't need it. My question is: Is there something I can do to get less fouling in the lower temperatures with out loosing my accuracy?

Might try a bit of compression and just seat the bullet a touch deeper.

Thanks Don,
I was reading in the archives that you have had pretty good luck with felt wads soaked in lube. I just ordered me up some 1/8" ones from Buffalo arms, do you think this might help, and how thick? Should I stick with the same 104 grains of powder and seat deeper how much, I am allready compressing .330? I started out seating .400 in the case, but I was getting paper rings, so I started moving the bullet out this stopped the paper rings.

Yes I've used the 1/8 in lubed wads from Sagebrush. They seem to help keep the fouling soft, when shooting the 420 gr patched bullets I can shoot as many as 10 with no loss in accuracy.
With the heavier bullets I can go 3-4 before wiping or a blowtube is a good idea.

Thanks Don,
As soon as I get the felt wads I will try your suggestions. I just hope when I get this figured out they shoot in warmer weather. If not I guess I will have two loads.

You may want to go back to the .400 compression, then set a .060 wad the felt wad and .030 wad then seat the bullet.
I chamfer the inside of the case mouths and have a lyman size die that sizes the cases down just enought to hold the bullets without any crimp.
Also keep digging in the archives, I don't know if Kenny Wasserburger put his first 110 patched loads here or not but he did have a load he used on a buffalo shoot in some pretty cold weather.

Hope Kenny reads this and post his loads he used with the big wad columns. I have searched for those and cant find them.

I found Kenny's load when he shot the buffalo back in Dec. 2007, here it is:

Rifle used was my 45-110 business rifle Tatonka.

Load as follows: Win 348 brass FL sized
110 grs FG Express lot 01-75 ( early test lot of Express) Very hot!
.060 veg fiber wad to compress powder .380
.300 Black Magic Grease Cookie
.019 Card wad from Winchester Primer box over Grease Cookie
Bullet about .200 in the case held by neck tension from a 45-90
Redding sizer die bullet will turn but not fall out of case fairly snug.
Avg 1370 fps with bullet used.
Bullet BACO .441 Paper patch bullet patched to .4475 cast 20-1.

Think I will give it a try substituting Norma brass and FFg Goex and SPG lube.
If I wet patch I can get down to .448

Thanks, I remembered it being a tall wad stack but did not remember that much compression. main interest was what he used between lube cookie and bullet.

the tall stack is in his target load , it is three wads that equal almost 1/8 of an inch I think it is a fiber , then cork, and then a poly wad ,,, but search for his target load for the stack

I think your right Dean.
I used the same wad combination in my .50 except I had a cork over the powder to help seal off the gas then a lube, poly over the lube and a card under the bullet, but later did away with the poly all it did was take up extra room and nothing for accuracy.

Here is another one of his loads I found long-range pp shooting 10-11-2009,

This load gives a ES of 3-4 Fps and a Sd of 1. Group size is 1.336 inches at 200 yards shot in the Pedersoli 5@200 match in 2008 At Raton NM.

It is Paper patched of course, and Wins now and then. My 45-110. So far top score has been a 96-4X at 800 yards.

Load is 110 Grs of FG Goex Express, BACO Money Bullet .446 diam patched to .451. MV is 1386 fps out of my Shiloh 1874 Long Range Express.

3 wads are used a .060 veg fiber to compress this load aprox .385, A .061 Poly wad then a .091 Cork wad on top of the stack, Bullet is .420 in the case.

Ok I loaded up several different rounds and went to the range. The temperature was 16 degrees and vertualy no wind, perfect for my test. The best load I had I could load 6 rounds with out blowing or wiping. Accuracy was good just a little over a half inch at 100 yards.
Here it is:

45 Norma brass from Shiloh (Fire formed)
Trimmed 2.875
CCI BR large rifle primer
106 grains Goex FFG dropped 24"
Compressed approximately .450
.030 poly wad on top of powder
1/8" felt wad soaked in SPG lube
.030 Walters veggie wad
565 grain out of a Brooks mould .442 dia, dry wrapped with 9#onion skin from Fox River Paper co.
If I do a good job of putting the patch on it measures .4485 (not to self don"t hurry the patches)
Finger seated .200 in the case
Just a slight tapper crimp to hold all together (this is a hunting load)
COL 4.185

I think I will try this load out for a few hundred rounds and see how it holds up. Going back to range this weekend to see how it does at farther distances still with out blowing or wiping between shots, hopefully at least 5 shots, going to be a little warmer, in the high 20's low 30's.

Thanks for all your help,

Trapper

Sounds like your sub bore diameter load is working like a champ..
If you get a chance you may want to grab up a can of KIK 1.5. That stuff really burns clean.

Thanks Don, I will have to try some KIK powder. I have been reading great things about it. Need to see if my supplier down in Billings can get me a can or two. Thanks again for all your help, if it wasn't for guys like you with all your knowledge and the willingness to share that knowledge I would have got rid of this old smoke stick a long time ago.
It can sure be frustrating at times, but it sure is a lot of fun to shoot when everything comes together.
Thanks again,
