I have a Ruger security six 6"bbl and ran some Fed personal defense 125 grs over the chrono. Holy speed demon! 1700-1740 fps.
I wanted to try loading some 125 jhp to approximate this load but only got up to 1475 before it got too warm. I was using Fed 200 primers with H110 and got up to 20.8 grs when I quit. I tried Win 296 with similar results.
Does anybody have any idea what the heck Fed does to get this velocity?

Here's your answer:

Note, that they are using a 10" barrel (no doubt a pressure barrel without a cylinder gap).

Win 296 is H110, so don't expect more difference than lot to lot
variation, which is what they are, different lots from the same
mfgr.

Fed may be using a non-canister powder so you may not be able
to equal their velocites. Also note that they may be using 9mm
bullets to get faster velocity - might pull one and check diameter.

I can get 1400+ fps easily in my .38 Super with a .357 bore using
124gr 9mm Hornady XTPs. Real decent accy, too. Go figure.
