I have an old well worn Mod 94, 44 rounds brass scavanged from the range. I want to load this mixed lot to a modest velocity say 1400 to 1600 fps using Lee 150RF in WQ'd WW. I'm thinking of using a revolver powder such as H4227, Lil'Gun, H110, Blue Dot, Power Pistol, Herco or Unique. Do any of you guys have any recipes for shooting cast 30/30's slow and cheap?

PS, I have about 150 rounds that I use with 4895, 4198 and 4064 that run 2000 + fps for serious duty, but I want cheap plinking fun with the scavanged brass.

Unique works well for light loads... I use it in most of my plinking loads, from 223 to 375H&H.

I like the 311041 bullet over 18gr. IMR 4198 and WLR primer. 1544 fps. This load will shoot 3/4 " 5 shot groups at 50yd. in my rifles.

Unique is also what I would suggest from those listed.
I found the BD to be very position sensitive.

15 grains of Alliant 2400 should get you right where you want to be.

I will second the 10 gr of Unique as I have been using that load for years in several 30-30s. If you want to go cheaper yet try a Lyman 31108 (may be 311008 today) or a lee soupcan boolit and 6 gr of red dot or 7 gr of Unique.

I use Greg Musials data for light plinkers. I am on my office computer right now and do not have the site. I think you can google it. I might not have his last name spelled right. Sorry, but, this might get you pointed in the right direction.

My setup also
Win 94 1950's vintage
Lee 150fn gc tl
8.0 - 10.0gr of Unique
WW were free.
only paid for primers,powder,gas checks.
I gas check all my bullets that way I can use them in either full power loads or plinker loads.
lots of fun at 50 yards w/8.0 gr Unique
kicks like a .22.

Loaded my 40 rounds, grabbed a couple of coffee cans of .357 and .45 Colt, took off work today......the range was closed for tree removal. Bright side though, I found another tire shop that was happy to supply me with raw material for a mere donation to their coffee pot fund. Good day after all.

A nice case filling load that is not positional is 9.5 of Trail Boss powder. Otherwise 10.0 of Unique is my favorite.

A 170 gr cast bullet # 31141 with a starter load of 7 gr of Unique. You'll think you are shooting a 22 LR.

I have used 10 gr. of 4756 with 150 gr cast as proposed by a gentleman from leadheads, actually he said 11grs. He said they won alot of state championships with this load. I bought some boolits from him before I started casting.

these run around 1400 fps out of my Marlin 30as with good accuracy.
10 grs. of unique works well too.
hope this is helpfull

My go to powder for your application would be 4227. I have found that it gives better accuracy than the faster burning powders at the velocities you are targeting.

12.5 grs /4227 should get you around 1,400 f.p.s. You should be able to eliminate the gas check too...saving$$! Use bullets as they come from the mold, no water drop....better results with softer bullets.

Good luck,

My favorite is 8gr Red Dot, with any cast bullet. Both of my 30-30's love it! Cheap, too!

The 311008 is a .312-.313 diameter mould made for the 32-20. Unless you have a very worn bore, why would you go to the 115gr larger bullet. The 170 grain flatnose over a light load such as 11.5gr of 5744 should do nicely.
