after reading about some of the cool projects you guys have done I am going to start collecting parts to build a new 40-50LB pot. currently I have 10 and 20 LB LEE's and a non working 10LB OLD Saeco.
So my question for you guys is when looking for a heating element how many watts should it be rated for? 1500, 2500 or bigger?
Thanks for the help.

I;m not sure, but I think it would depend on if the element is internal or outside your pot. I'd talk to someone that supplies the elements and see if there's a formula for figuring it out.

FWIW- I use a stainless measuring cup that holds over 40lbs of alloy and it heats fine with an 1100 watt open coil hot plate. I imagine more wattage would mean a faster melt.
