Wich is your preferred powder for cast rifle bullet loads? SR 4759 or Accurate 5744?

My favorite is 2400, but I don't try for full power loads.

Another 2400 guy here. Meters well, good for 1300 to 1700 fps in most cartridges.

What isn't to like?

Good morning & Happy Thanksgiving
When I started with cast boolits the fellers I knew used 2400 and Unique for near everything. Hard to beat 2400 in most all cast bullet loads. But in the last 10 years I have used 5744 in most my large bore rifles and 45 Colt off & on... works good..

I, too, have used a lot of 2400 for cast rifle loads. My preferred powder for .308 Win - 8x57JS - .30-06 class cartridges is a full case of super cheap WC860 (well, it WAS cheap in 2003 when I bought it) sitting on top of 4 grains IMR4895 over the flash hole. I occasionally get that "one ragged hole" using that load with the Lee C185-.312-1R boolit in my 1944 Finland Tikkakoski barreled rebuild 91/30 Mosin-Nagant. The 4 grains of IMR4895 burns up all the mummies that WC860 otherwise leaves in the barrel and fired cartridge.

I like whatever I can get on sale. Preferred price point is $10 or so per lb. Currently working my way through big can of IMR 3031 and a smaller can of Alcan #5. I have an old can of reloader 21 stashed away for future experimenting.

SR 4759 does it for me.

Between the two powders you ask about, I prefer 4759. In my experience, it leaves less unburned powder residue at the levels I load it. As far as accuracy, some of my guns prefer 4759, and others prefer 5744.

I like and use both, although 5744 is somewhat cheaper here.

Never tried 5744 I have 5 lbs. of SR-4759 so all reduced loads get that!
I have had good luck in 45-70 with RE-7 also it shoots tight groups and the barrel is not in very good condition with large pits and a .461 groove diameter. The gun is a Springfield model 1884 Made in 1889 and has seen some neglect before I owned it.

Red Dot gives me the most bang for the buck in handgun, H335 and IMR4895 in rifles does well for me. I've played with 2400 and it just doesn't do as well as I like. I ended up with a pound of Longshot from another development project that didn't pan out and have started working it through the .40S&W. It's showing some serious promise as my new pet-powder, so long as I can work it over into other cartridges as easily.

You didn't say what caliber. My 30/30 loves 5744 but both my 222 and 6mm Rem love 4759. My current mystery is why my 223 likes Unique better than 4759. The bottom line is that you will have fun figuring it out for yourself.

5744 in my 45-70 trapdoor loads is plenty accurate and clean burning.

However, due to the cost of 5744, I will be going to either 2400 or a surplus powder as soon as my 8 pounds of 5744 runs out.

HI,
Have not used much of ether of those 2 powders.
Lots of unique, green dot, 700X, 2400,IMR 3031 IMR 4198, BUT HAD TO MOVE TO SURPLUS POWDERS ABOUT 10 YRS. AGO.
2400 IS MY MAG. PISTOL POWDER FOR MAX. ACCURATE HUNTING LOADS.
Practice loads in lower power 38 & squib rifle loads is now Russian unique, I will miss it sorely when it is all shot up as I do not believe I can replace it.
WC 860 is my mid range rifle powder now.
WC 820 is my mag. pistol practice powder of choice now.:Fire::Fire:

They're all good depending on the application. I use a lot of the Hodgdon and Winchester ball powders nowdays with cast boolits, I'm enjoying learning about progressive burn rates and delaying/extending pressure curves.

FWIW: I've "played around" with a lot of different powders in my years of casting, but if I had to live with only one, terrible thought that it is, I honestly believe that 5744 would come out on top.....waaay on top.

Now, having said that, I have to say that over the years I have likely shot more cast boolits using Unique than any other powder...a little dab will do ya, and a pound of that stuff seems to last a long long time.

Still yet, that is just one persons opinion. I have a few guys I shoot with occasionally that would rather fight than change from their own brand of poison, and these folks all go through more SR 4759 in a years time than I have ever used in a lifetime.

I consider this a really good question.
Once you stop and really think about it for a bit, the harder it is to give an answer!

I've yet to buy SR 4759, though it is on my list. The .30-30 Model 94 is the only rifle that prefers 5744. All the others excel with either Unique or 2400, with the exception of the Swede which can't make up her mind between 2400 and IMR 4227.
