View Full Version : Front rest for your bench

I have a friend that is just starting to reload and shoot some off the bench.
Of course, money is always an issue.

He shot a few days ago with no front rest at all. You can imagine his groups......
I told him that I'd make him a front rest.

Anywhere 2 pieces of wood touch there is wood glue and wire nails.

Tell me what you think ?

The high density foam is attached with 2 part Devcon Epoxy. It is there to stay !

Bruce,

What a nice compliment. I've already had a few of my friends wanting one also.

Best to you,

Ben

Ben, great idea. I agree with Bruce that it will get used and re-used.

You fellows make a " bazillion " of em' and enjoy ! !

The bolt is a carriage bolt , 1/4" dia, that is 2 inches long.

Ben

You may need these dimensions also :

Pretty clever, Ben. The only issue I could forsee is a tendency to string shots vertically with a heavily-recoiling rifle, I've run into that myself with my multi-step home built front rest. The whole rest will lift as it rocks back under recoil. I would say the fix would be to mount the plywood on the side of the block rather in the middle of it, but it's only an issue if it proves to be.

Gear,

May have to lay some " slick " fabric on the high density foam to allow the rifle to free recoil without any interference with the front rest.

You make a very good point.

Just draping a plastic grocery bag over the rubber will let the rifle slide without tilting the rest. Make sure there is at least two thicknesses of bag.

Thanks for the design Ben! I too shall build one for a new shooter (and maybe one for myself!).

Thats a nice little set up there. I'll be making a couple for the grandkids to use at the range.

Ahh, but of course! Like most good ideas, that's a simple and inexpensive solution, even for checkered forends. I'll have to try that on mine.
