Picked up a gun, that shoots 45 Colt, but the bore/groove of the barrel comes out to 45 rifle specs.

What is the largest diameter boolit anyone has been able to load in their 45 colt guns?

Don't think a .454" boolit is going to be very accurate in a .458 groove dia. barrel.

Thanks

Why not try some 300 to 350 gr. .460 bullets? Not that much difference:

Down at the bottom they start at 292 and go up from there. I've heard of guys shooting up to 425's in colt, but COL becomes an issue usually:

***sorry quick edit***

I'd specifically try the 330 gould bullet from Lyman #457122. It'd give you some expansion at lower handgun velocities. ;) If that one keyholes, then you'd need to go down the length to the shorter 300's etc.

I have used 45 cast rifle bullets in my 45 Colts before. In one gun I sized them to .457 with no problems.

And what are the throats?

I'd like to know these too..... Looks like you might be looking for a hollow base mold for that one tho.......

It uses chambers that fit in the gun. The chambers a set up for a 45 Colt, but they were made from 45 black powder chambers and just adapted for this firearm. So, chambered in 45 Colt, with .470" bores for the adapters, and .458" groove barrels. Will get a pic or two.

The make and QUALITY of the gun will have a LOT to do with how heavy you can go. Some Ruger revolvers can handle much heavier loads than many other guns of like caliber. I saw a gun on the wall of a gun club that was fired ONCE with some one elses hand load. The other gun was used for Moose and Grizzly bear.

I am curious to see what it is. And I have to ask weather it is safe to shoot. Sounds like a lot going on there.

The throat and more important, chamber dimensions will control how big a boolit you can
use. Nobody can answer this question except you - make dummy cartridges and see
what will chamber. Our opinions and experiences mean little.
