A friend just sent me the site to replace your lost DD 214

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

For those of us who have been out for a while, moved a lot or just forgot where the D@^%&D stuff disappeared.

A few years ago, I requested copies of my records. Included in the package, along with health records, PCS and promotion orders, etc., were my various medals and ribbons. Some of the orders included the names of squadron and crew members who had been long forgotten.

Also, in-hand copies of health records could be of assistance, if dealing with the V. A.

I requested my father's records, too, but they were destroyed in a late '60s/early '70s fire.

I think they had a big homecoming bondfire in St Louis and many of our records were lost, Do not know what the VA will tell you if yours were destroyed at that time.

Bet I can guess tho. [smilie=b:[smilie=b:[smilie=b:

I've had a couple and one thing I do everywhere I go is get a certified copy on record with the County. So far I have 4 places I can go to get a true copy. The firebox holds the origionals. I feel for you guy's whose records got torched in that warehouse fire. If you are able to get your records might not be a bad idea to get your copies digitized and put on a thumb drive or CD-ROM to go in the firebox with everything else.

My local Army/Navy reserve center keeps a copy of all of that info.
If they don't they sure lead me to believe that.

I just need to call up and request a copy be sent to "so and so" and all is well.

Well there are some of us that have been out of service for over 50-60 years so there is a much bigger chance the DD 214 has been misplaced over the years.

My Navy Reserve base that I flew out of ( NAS Glenview) has been decomissioned and turned into a very upscale gated community so I do not think I could get a copy from the security gate guard. :bigsmyl2:

I recently went to the VA and now am covered by them for medical. Even if a person does not have a disability it is worthwhile to get a current VA ID card. Many businesses give 10% or more discount on their products.
Home Depot, Lowe's, Verizon (15%), Arby's, and many, many more. Most of the big chain auto parts store give 10%.

Because back in the day, the pay was so pathetic they give you extra credit which could increase your retirement check. If you only served the minimum as I did, probably won't make much difference.[smilie=p:

It may make a difference in your SS payment, I'm told if you don't mention it then it isn't figured in.

Your MILITARY personnel records are maintained by the National Military Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Mo.

NONE other. Those records may have medical documents within them from your active service.

The VA will have records pertaining to your enrollment in and use of their MEDICAL system as a military person or as an entitled person . The two organizations are NOT the same.

GOOGLE each for the official addresses and descriptions of what they do have and how to get it.

Social security will tell you what documentation they want from you as a potential beneficiary when they tell you it is time to do something regarding Social Security. You know they are not worrying about Odingo Obama, barack's illegal uncle that works in the liquor store, or Auntie Odingo on the dole in Boston, just worrying about you. Don't be telling no war stories to them .

As for me it took more hassle and to get a new raised seal BC from PA, despite my ownership of my raised seal original than it took for barack to get a Connecticut SSN, A Harvard law degree, and vetted by the DNC as a citizen eligible for the presidency, even with only one citizen parent.

Somehow I can't bring myself to trust Nancy Pelosi much anymore.

The SS lady was nice though and had records of every dime I ever made, except that lucky for me poker game I nailed one night floating about in the Tonkin Gulf way back when.

Good to know. I will be retiring next January. I have my original medical documents. I don't know how or why but in with a bunch of stuff I put in a box when I ets'd there they were. They were kind of fun to look at. I got six stitches while in Nam but I cannot remember why. Kind of strange with memories. I can only remember eating in a mess hall (or anyplace else) once during that time. Strange.

The day after I applied for early Socialist Security, a gentleman from the local office called to say that he received the application and that he had already verified my service dates. (A copy of my DD 214 was set to go out in that afternoon's mail.) It appears that Socialist Security's computer can talk to the Department of Defense's computer. Scary stuff, for sure, but why am I not surprised?

My Dad passed away back in 2005, his records were destroyed and most other paperwork was "snowed in" in N Idaho. Fortuneatly, we were able to find some other paper work and they created a DD214 for his burial benefits.

As for myself, I have a hardcopy of my DD214 in a firebox, electronic copy on my computer, sent a copy to myself via email (gmail) and have uploaded a copy on Army Knowledge Online (AKO). To easy to misplace a disk, thumbdrive or have the computer crash. The email version is the easiest one to get to.

My personal belief is that our once great nation is dying from corruption, greed, loss of Chrisian religion and principled intelligent leadership by men and women who have not the greatness and conviction within to save and improve America for our children.

As just one issue of goobermint stupidity I ask why a hundred and twenty five thousand sunni muslims a month are being admitted to the country when sunnis hate our guts. If we have to have middle easterners, why not admit that number of people from the area opressed by muslims who would be grateful to be delivered from muslim hell on earth where they live now.

I am not 100% certin, but I beleive all states will register your DD214 at local court houses as a public record. If a need for a certified copy arises, you contact the local court house for a copy of the registered document.

Like many others my records got toasted in St Louis a long time ago. There are no medical records available either from ST.Louis, the base hospital or the civilian hospital so it has been an interesting fight but I have got most of what I wanted and just accept that the government is full of holes.
I went for a long time before I got into the VA deal and it was too late to get records as they were burned and I stupidly lost my copies or had someone lose them for me, think ex here
Oh well life goes on and I am not sure where I will end up but hope I never see a nursing home or old folks home as they would kill me as I don't like being stuck anyplace to long unless it is my own home and I can die there on my terms.
