I picked up a almost unblemished 25n, this is with the microgroove barrel and it really shoots.

I had been looking at a new bolt 22lr and was thinking about the Savage MKII as I like a good trigger and wanted to try the accutrigger. However the plastic stock, trigger guard were a real turn off.

So I was very happy to find this 25n - blued metal, wood and metal furniture only and in very good condition.

Yesterday was some testing with a variety of 22lr ammunition - interestingly it seemed to prefer the cheapest - Stirling brand, made in the phillippines for Fuller Firearms Australia.

Now certainly this is only at 25 metres, sitting with a tree for support but I was very happy.

The trigger has some creep but probably just needs a 1000 round trigger job.

Now my question for castboolits: the rifle came with a generic 4x scope and the rear iron sights have been removed to fit this. Front blade still in place.

Should I order the marlin stock sights to replace - or consider the Marbles, either leaf or folding? Marbles also have available in Australia the bullseye which is the combination of the older spring sight with elevator and a peep.

still thinking about what to do.

Anybody else run a 25n?

I have the Glenfield 25MN which was made for Sears back in the 60's or 70's. My grandfather bought the gun and rarely shot it. When I turned 14, I started shooting it and never gave it back basically. lol He let me keep it since he didn't use it for much. When I was 17 I decided to give it a big game look, so I reshaped the stock and used Birchwood Casey's gun oil in about 6 coats after letting each sink in. It still shoots 3/4" groups at 50 for me after thousands of rounds. ;)

***quick edit***

My most accurate has been CCI Mini-Mag HP's. Scored best for me in my Glenfield Model 60 also. ;)

On rimfire central these are pretty well thought of, There is articles telling the exact procedures to improve the trigger, and some are even adding an extra screw to stiffen them up.
Great little guns, and well worth the usual asking price for them.

One thing that I did not realise until I got the 25n home was the very effective way the bolt picks up and captures a round from the magazine - a true controlled round feed in 22lr.

The bolt strips a round off the magazine and the round then is pushed up into the bolt face to be held there as it goes forward to the breech.

This is quite different from the Bruno/Anshutz/Krico type of bolt which pushes a round off the top of the magazine but only grasps it once the two prongs push against the bolt face.

So although one is not going to require the controlled round feed as the bunny rabbit charges towards you with a 22lr - still a great way the rifle handles the small 22lR.

I have two Marlin 80's a Marllin branded one (a DL model) and a Sears branded one. Both are tack drivers. Most all the Marlin bolt guns are tack drivers and all are made pretty much alike. Just model name changes over the years.
