I'm looking for advise on a good pistol powder. I currently load with a lot of Unique and 2400. I load for many different pistol calibers but the majority of them are .45 Colt, .45ACP, .38/.357 and .327 mag and 9mm.

I know that's a lot of not-so-similar calibers, but I was wondering if maybe anyone had an opinion on Alliant's Promo Powder? I'm going to still use Unique and 2400 but Promo is almost $25 cheaper per 8 pounds and a jug could last a long time.

So basically I'm just looking for your opinions on this powder if you have one?

Thanks!

Jon

Universal or FFFg for the 45 Colt, 231 for the 45 ACP and 38, 296 or 2400 for the 357, Universal for the 9mm and I honestly haven't a clue on the 327.
If I was trying to use one for most or all it would be the Universal.

I know nothing of Promo but I have used Unique in all the calibers you mention and it works well in all.

Yes I have used close to 40 pounds of unique. Its about my favorite powder by far. I was hoping to see if maybe I can save some $$$ by giving Promo a try, just don't want to find out the hard way its not what I really want. I should think it would be fine for .45 ACP, supposed to be red-dot.

Unique and 2400 are my go to powders for Cast loading in pistols and rifle cartridges I just looked at the Alliant reloaders guide and they do not list promo powder for any of your calibers anyway that I could see though I did not check out all the bullet choices.

Promo should be fine for all of the calibers you listed, and lots more as well. It is designed to be a cheaper replacement for Red Dot (albeit not as bulky), so I wouldn't be afraid to use it for the same pistol and rifle loads I use Red Dot for. In fact, I plan to buy some next time I start running low on Red Dot.
My opinion only.

I use a lot of Promo in my 12 ga reloading for sporting clays and it does well there but I have not used it in any metallics. I see no reason why it would not work just fine anywhere Red Dot or Bullseye would work.

Buy one-pound of Red Dot, to see if your guns like it, before buying eight-pounds of Promo and discovering that they don't.

Hodgdon shows Longshot in .38 Spl giving the highest velocity. It is listed as a shotgun powder. :coffee:
