With deer season just around the corner, I wanted to cast
and shoot some 311291 " Cup Point " HP's out of my TIKKA
30 - 06.

Might be a good way to get some good expansion without
the entire nose of the bullet blowing off the bullet. The cavity
is rather large, but not all that deep.

What do you think ?

Here it the bullet at 100 yards prior to HP'ing the mold.

5 rounds at 100 yds
g/cs were .014 " thickness Amerimax AL made with Pat's g/c making tool :

Yep, I think one of those in the " boiler room "
of a nice white-tailed buck would probably do the trick.

Ben,
Hope you get a deer with one so you can tell us how they work. I use a little smaller HP in that boolit. .125 to .175 and use small de-burring tool to taper the nose of the HP a little.

Cast of WW+2% tin / lead at 50/50 or 16-1 lead - tin alloy it should be sure killer for sure.....bit of redundancy there but that bullet is worth it......:drinks:

Mike,

I think the score will be :

Cup point 1
Deer 0

Not certain if I fully understand your question? Are you asking how is a HP bullet made ?

Ben do you have any rifles that aren't tack drivers?

I " Have Owned " some that were not tack drivers, but I found them another home.

The only rifles that interest me are the accurate ones.

i'm gonna make a prediction that they open within the first 2-3"s then shed most of the fold over and penetrate with either of the two alloys larry mmentioned.

If your prediction is correct, I'll have me a " keeper ".

What do you think ?

I think you have a LOT of time on your hands to experiment

I also think you won a Lottery at some time, as you have "invested" quite a bit of $$ into moulds and such.

I live vicariously through your experiences! :drinks:

I had Eric at hp mold service make my 311299 into a hp was only $40.00 thought that was reasonable. He sent me 3 pin profiles, the cup pin looks like the one in the pic. I'm looking forward to shooting them.

I just had Erik cup point a 45-70 mold for me. I think @ high vel imp[cts or softer alloys, the cup point is the way to go for exp & keeping the bullet together. My hunting handgun bullets are setup this way & work really well from 1000fps to 1250fps w/ a 20-1 or 25-1 alloy.

Now combine that with a dual alloy boolit with a soft lead nose and it would be devastating.

I just got the mold back so haven't worked with it yet. I expect it will be fine w. ww alloy @ 1600-1700fps. The cup point design doesn't have HP walls to shear off. It allows the bullet to expand some, & not lose anything or much of anything. We'll see!
