Have any of you messed with the bore riding wadcutters like Penn Bullet's Thunderhead?
As a plinking and/or target bullet it seems like an interesting choice. These have a .452 base and a .442 meplat. In fact, everything above the crimp groove is .442" with no ogive.

I imagine they'll act like an overgrown 38 wadcutter and the 270 gr weight is a natural for the Colt or moderate Casull. I imagine if you wanted to get creative they'd put a hurting on the largest piggies while not being to hard on the shooter.

I'm sure there are molds out there for something like this. What kind of performance have you folks seen?

Finally found it. It was member GLL who has one of these, maybe he'll chime in. Post #9 has a pic.

One of the main points with a wadcutter design is to take up the empty case volume a reduced charge gives by seating the bullet very deep. With a bore riding wadcutter, you would have to use very bulky powders like TrailBoss or Vihtavuori N32C (Tin Star) to get the good fill rates needed for consistent velocities while still keeping the WC within the velocity range where it is most accurate (below the sound barrier).

I wouldn't mind trying one though. Would be neat for the .38 Special.

I've been playing with something like that in .44 for my bisley flat top. Like the looks of a filled up cylinder throat. I got a few ideas figured out and need to get one of them spun up.

IME with cast wadcutters one in 357 mag and two in 44 mag although accuracy will be excellent 25 yards groups will open up to 4 times larger or more at 50 yards even when useing a scope
saeco # 052- 148gr wc
saeco # 944 -200gr wc
lee 210 gr wc disconued ?

These are Thor's Hammers. They're not exactly bore rider design, but they do fill up the cylinder.

Nice pic but that cylinder is missing a hole.

Just say no to five shooters.

Clone of LYMAN 429352 in a brass mold from OLD WEST BULLET MOLDS. NOE has a tri weight wadcutter group buy currently; MIHEC did a hollow base wadcutter in 44 a year or two ago. I have the OLD WEST and the MIHEC; also one of GLL's group buy 200 grainers from awhile back.

I don't really need another mould, but it would be interesting to have the front of a hollow base boolit be the correct size for a gas check....turn that bad boy around and have a cup point. Not much for long range, but I've got a bunch of lever guns and an M1A for those applications.

Yep I've got one.

shoot it in my 44mag RSRH

75 yds it about the farthest I can have that boolit shoot accurately. After that accuracy falls off drastically.

Interesting thread. Got some in the mail just a few days ago to try. Will try them in both revolver and rifle, but know that rifle will be single loading. Bet they would be a whale of a close range pig stopper!

I've heard of accuracy issues shorter than 100 yards.
I should be able to get them up to a high enough speed to hang in there at 100 yards. My 460 Encore puts out velocity numbers high enough to make six gun shooters think twice.

I just ran 335 gr lead at 1586 using 20 gr of Power Pistol. The same boolit over 39 gr of H110 averaged a wee bit over 2000 fps.
I've run 250 gr jacketed over 2200 fps so I should be able to push 270 gr lead fast enough to melt it to the bore.
