Well I'm embarrassed Jim, I gave $72.00 in 1982 for the Rifle I am buying this mold for, so I am paying more for the mold than the rifle. I've only shot 20 rounds total out of this rifle, got 20 rounds of surplus 7 x 57 with the rifle when I bought it back then. Once we get the mold I guess I'll have to shoot it again, I laid in about 200 rounds of boxer brass for it back in the late 1990's when midway had some they put on sale.

Just got done with a short casting session. They look pretty good. I was a little suprised on the weight only coming to 145gr but they should be good. Can't wait to try them.

My first custom mould and it's a real beauty. Cast of straight wheel weights it drops in the .2885" range, but light at 143-grains.

Shot a few yesterday and am looking forward to its load development and accuracy compared to Lyman's 287461.

The sprue cutter lube, Allen wrenches, and top punch were unexpected surprises. As needs and funds permit, more NOE moulds will surely be purchased, as the 312440 and 311284 look very tempting.

Thank you, Mr. Nelson.

Thank you, Mr. Nelson.

If you really want to start some trouble, try one of Al's brass molds [smilie=p:
Not sure I can go back to aluminum

Jim:

Let us know on loads and groups. I have not cast in my mold yet (other Projects and Pressing work around the house), but will be interested in your results if you share.

Thanks

Got my sizing die made yesterday :) Hoping to get to the range today.
This boolit, I got the larger version, the nose(bore riding portion) fits my Handi Rifle 7mm-08 perfectly
with just the lightest of engraving. The base needed sized to fit the .285 groove.
They are dropping from my home made sizing die @.2852". I have high hopes for this
working in this Handi Rifle.

Got to the range today. I tried 4 different loads.
all loads used range lead alloy, bhn was 8-9, fairly soft -leads to a question later
Federal 210 primers
Recluses 45-45-10 lube
gas checked with Gator checks from Blammer
all where 10 shot groups
first load was 19 grains of 5744 resulted in 6"= groups at 100 yards
load #20 26 grains H4895 6"= groups at 100 yards
Load #3 was "the load" 16 grains 2400 5-1/2" @100 ards
Last load, 12 grains of Unique resulted in the best group at 3-3/8" @100 yards.

The lower the velocity, the better the group, which brings me to my question. In my mind, I think this alloy is too soft,
and needs some stiffening. Lyman book says #2 alloy seems to be yielding best results for accuracy.
What say you folks?

Jim:

I am currently down in Southern Nevada, but will be returning to the Kalispell area early November.

1. What Range do you shoot at? I am currently a member and shoot at the Whitefish Range.

2. Interested in getting together in Mid-November (After Marine Corps Birthday on the 10th) to discuss a joint effort to wring out the 7mm Mold on some outings, and to explore use of alloys/loads?

Mustang,
I belong to the North Valley Sportsman Club, Columbia Falls Range.
I would definitely be interested in a group effort to wring it out. I've had good luck
with my 280 Rem, built on a FN Mauser 98 action. This mold is part of the search to make my
Handi rifle in 7-08, work. The rifle is proving to be a challenge. Between a poorly built example,
and a barrel that was way over size, this mold fit the bill in that department. I'm still fighting issues
mechanically with the rifle, It will not shoot with the for-end installed. I'm gaining, but just havent had the time to stay with it.
Now that winter is moving in, I'll have some more time.
Sending contact info to you in a PM

leaps and bounds today at the range :D
The Handi is now shooting fairly well, with some more for-end work.
I also water dropped the last batch of boolits raising the BHN from 8 to 16.
The same load of 16 grains of 2400 went from 6-1/2 inch groups to barely over 2 inches @100 yards:bigsmyl2:

So, how hard is too hard for a hunting boolit?
