I went to cast for my 44 Colt (Richards Conversion by ASM) and discovered I no longer have the mold. I may have borrowed it and returned it or perhaps I just used it to cast a bunch and never owned it, anyway, I am in the market for a new mold. I see Lee has a 200 grain RNFP and Big Lube has a 200 grain boolit also. Does anyone have experience with either? Or is there something better out there? I do not shoot cometition so would prefer to stay with the original weight. The revolver was made to shoot standard boolits, not heeled ones so about 43 caliber.

StrawHat, I’ve been looking for a good 200 gr LRN for my son to use in .44 Special. This month’s Handloader has an article by Mike Ventrino where he lists (1) 199-grain RCBS 44-200-CM, (2) 205-grain Lyman 427098, (3) 205-grain Lyman 427666 and (4) 211-grain RCBS 44-200-FN complete with pics of the boolits. It’s in the “.44 WCF in Handguns” article. The 211-grain RCBS 44-200-FN looks like it has the highest bearing surface, but a .427 might favor a lower pressure loading than a .429, and 427098 is probably the most historically accurate mold.

FWIW, I got one of the Lee six hole 429-200 RNFP molds early this summer. It throws .431 slugs.

Good morning
If you end up with a shalow groove bullet remember to smear a extra dobber of lube on the boolit nose before loading . I shoot 44 Russain & this simple solution permits the use of any correct diameter boolit. If you are going to need a bunch of ammo, heat some lube (45-55 olive oil & beeswax works well) in a pan and dip the exposed nose. Very fast and smells good in the kitchen. Justy do not overheat and set it on fire...

So, an update. A few months after the original posting, I borrowed a Lee 6 cavity. Cast a bunch and returned it. Shot them in the Richards revolvers over as much BP as I could comfortably jam into a case. From what I remember, they all hit the targets.

Now, I am looking for either a mold or recommendation as in the OP. What is the current go to boolit for the 44 Colt. This is the modern 44 Colt, inside lubed, .430 diameter.

Thank you.

Kevin

In .44-40, .44 Russian and .44 Special my design is Accurate 43-206H.
