Good morning
Rifle was reamed to .405 by JES & arrived back in Illinois Friday. Next step for me will be to ream the chamber to 414 Supermag when I get back next June. Only possible snag I can see are the rim sizes. The 414 SM rim is .488 and the 30-30 is .506. Not a huge difference but will depend on the extractor hook being long enough to get a solid purchase. Will go with the origonal till it should ever fail.
May also have to add a metal block to the cartrige stop as the 414 SM case is 1.60" and the 30-30 is 2.04". Again may be a no problem as is.

Have you located brass for it?

Could you make cases from 30/30 brass?

UPDATE:

I did a bit of Googling and it appears that there has been a recent iteration of the Dan Wesson 414 Supermag revolver and Starline made some brass for it.

Howdy
Brass I already have as I also shoot the 414 SM in a DW 8" revolver. Brass can be formed from .303 Savage.. 30-30 does not work well but can be done with lots of work per case.
If I did not already have the 414 SM I would go with the 405 JES as it is far more powerful and the 444 parent case is more prevelent. But I just wanted to make a 414 SM lever gun ever since I got the 414 DW put together..

Mike, what is the capacity of your case (414SM) compared to the 405 WCF?

I think the .405 is about 2.580 " so my 414 SM 1.60" case (stretched 41 mag ) is about an inch shorter... Big difference in powder capacity. I am figuring on the 414 SM with a 280 grainer to get about 1800 fps using 1680 as propelant. May not make that but it will due for deer and pigs and maybe a bear at 50 yards. The old 405 WCF did a standup job on critters as a BP load so I figure the 414SM with 1680 will do the same.

For some reason I thought the 414SM was a longer cartridge. Thought it used the 444 as parent brass. I did some research and found Elgin Gates was assosiated witht he SM series and realized it was one of the cartridges brought out during the Siloutte era. I will be interested to hear about your rifle and how things work out for the project.

Greetings
If I remember correctly the first pieces of 414 SM brass were 41 mag brass with the extension brazed on to make it 1.600". After it was viewed as a real possibility then one of the manufacturers made up a batch of brass for real tests. Before I actually had my 414 SM I bought Starline Brass to have it on hand. Committed 50 to the DW revolver. Will commit 50 to this rifle. Have a 41 mag 14" Contender that will become a 414 SM also when I get back up there.

I thought the 414 was a true .41 caliber.

Howdy Idaho
JES bores at .405 then the groove ends up at a nominal .410. So yes this is a .410 mag or 414SM diameter.
