The 686 fits me like it was molded just for my hand. However, I have the opportunity to purchase a 66-1 from a friend but I hate the grip shape. Fine shooting gun though. So I'm curious if someone makes a grip similar to the 686 (square butt preferred) to fit on the 66.

I'll check Brownell's etc, but I figured someone here would surely know.

It currently looks like this only 4"

What I'd like is more like this (this is a 66 I just found on the net) Apparently I've answered my own question! I'm not sure of the frame types though. Is the one above considered square or round?

The square-butt K(M19/M66) and L(586/686) Smiths use exactly the same grip frame. Whatever grips fit one will fit the other. S&W, however, has offered a number of different styles/patterns over the years. I own three L-frames, each with a different style of factory grips, and have seen/handled several other styles, as well.

The first picture you posted is a round butt.

The second posted appears to be a square butt.

You can get square butt style grips designed to fit on a round butt gun.

Unless your heart is set on a rubber grip, do yourself a favor and check out Ahrends grips. They specialize in 1911 and S&W grips and have many shapes. The top photo shows a round butt but you can also get a round to square but conversion grip if you prefer a little more material at the bottom.

Just about any grip company makes grips for the K/L frame S&W revolvers, since they know that every gun owner has at least one of them. (Ok, may not everyone, but I've got enough to make up for most of those who don't)

You can look at Hogue, Pachmyer, Altamont, etc. They all have them in just about any style you desire.

Hope this helps.
