I am toying with the idea of using a heavy 200+ gr boolit in my Ruger GP-100. I want to use it to play IDPA ESR Division. I noticed Lyman makes the 358315 boolit intended for the 35 Remington. My thought is by using the heavier boolit I should be able to make power factor (Vel x boolit weight) of 165 easier with less felt recoil.

Has anyone tried this boolit in .357mag cases and if so what were your results?

Take Care

Bob

It will never fit ... you will have to seat more than half the boolit it the case to keep it in the cylinder.

I'd suggest one of the Ranch Dog Designs.

The 175 grain Ranch Dog mold came in the mail yesterday and I plan on running some today.

Will try to lube and run some from the 357 Maggie (GP 100 today) and 10" Herrett this week.

My goal was a heavy boolit that would not interfere in the cylinder throat and have to be seated deeper than necessary.

Oh Yeah, in the box was a 165 grain 30 caliber RD mold. May not get to run boolits with it today.

Oh yeah, Thanks Michael.

The heavier bullet will increase felt recoil, not lower it.

IHMSA shooters have done this sort of thing in the past. They loaded up either the 358 315 or the RCBS 35-200 GC in .38 Special cases over a brisk load of some flavor of magnum powder (I don't know the details), and then shot them out of long-barreled .357 Mag revolvers. They resorted to the 200 grain bullets in order to maximize downrange momentum at the 200m ram line.

i just shot some loads today, out of my 357 marlin rifle.Used the 358430 boolit, that weighs 208 grs with ww alloy. Loaded these in 38 specials cases, and shot them from 900 f.p.s.,up to 1300,with unique powder. At around 1000 f.p.s.,these things shot some wicked tight groups.

They look kinda stupid though, not manly like a swc!

No Sir. Power factor is calculated by velocity x weight of bullet in grains.

A heavier bullet travelling at a lower velocity will have less felt recoil than a lighter bullet achieving the same power factor.
