So I have this older model Winchester 55 in 30 WCF. I plan on using it to hunt this year and want to use cast bullets. the rifle is a take down and is in 90% condition and perfectly sound. The load I plan on using is a Lee 170 grain flat point with 25 grains of IMR 3031. Is this a good load to start with? Any other ideas are gladly welcome.

This should work pretty well. I estimate velocity at near 1750'/s. 3031 is great powder for the 30-30. My load for a 30-30 trapper has been 24 gr of ReLoder 7 to get me near to 1800'/s. Your load should shoot clear through a deer. Go for it.

nice safe and effective 200yd load for deer. I would love to have it's big brother in 38-55 with a full octagon barrel and half-magazine.

Load should work, but you only have 3 weeks of the season left. You should have started this back in June! Maybe you'll be lucky and the boolit will fit and the load will work.

The season has not even started yet. It begins down here on the 19 of November. I shoot almost every other week and I sighted the rifle in already. Just was wondering on peoples imput. I guess I should have been more clear.

25 grains of 3031 is a good load with the 170 grain bullet. I've used the Lyman 311291 for a long time in 2 different 94's. Actually 25-30 grains of 3031 is the "zone" where things work well. I did some testing some time ago and found that 27 grains shot more accurately for me. 30 grains starts to approach factory spec at 2000fps or so, but I got better grouping at 27 grains. The model 55 is a beautiful gun and a real prize in TD. My 94 rifle is a TD deluxe with a tapered barrel and tang sights and it gets its share of compliments. LLS

My Winchester model 55 is also a take down. It is not a deluxe by yesterday standars but would be by todays. It has wood that you no longer see today and the metal finish and fit are first rate.
