Just wondering if there are any WildCaters out there? I have a customer that has inherited a 7mm x 300 weatherby magnum and wants me to load him some ammo. Just wondering what type of powders and primers you use.

Very slow powders and Federal magnum primers. Does he have any ammo with it that you could disassemble?
The 300 case is longer than the 7mm weatherby but if I was going to load this I might use the max loads for the 7mm Weatherby as a starting point for loading.

If you call Hodgdon they may have some data for you. 913-362-9455, Mon- Thurs 7a.m to 5:30pm

Back in the 1960s I was into wildcatting pretty heavy, but with all the standard cartridges now avalable, stopped.

Just a few were, 8mm-06, 450 Alaskan, (AKA 45-348 Winchester Improved) 35 Gibbs, .257 Ackley improved, 44 Van Houten Super, and several others

Compare the case capacity with the 7mm STW, it should be close, Reloader 25, IMR 7828, H1000, and Retumbo should be four that would work well. I've loaded for the STW and the 7mm Ultra Mag in the past, I started and stopped with Reloader 25, but the other three should work too.
And yes Federal 215's are the way to go.

7mmSTW starting loads should be fine, work up from there. Both Sierra manuals I have publish only one load and it uses discontinued H570 powder @ 87 grains with 168BTHP MK

6mm 284 I am using some old 50 70 Thunderbird powder and have had good results. Overbore rounds should respond best to very slow powders.
You might want to start out with lighter bullets too.
Check to see if it has the Weatherby freebore. That feature can lower the initial pressure.
With a gun like that how do you tell if it fired normally or it blew up? [smilie=1:
I hope you get on the right track with it.

I can't imagine it being much different than loading a 7mm weatherby as both the 7mm WBY and 300 WBY use the same parent case.

warf73,

They use the same parent case, but the .33 Wby is about .27" longer than the 7mm Wby. This makes a big difference in case capacity and suitable loads.

parrot1969, that used to be a fairly popular wildcat, there has to be load info floating around the internet somewhere. If it were me I wouldn't custom load for somebody else's wildcat unless I had the rifle there to shoot, and I would charge accordingly.

Like others have said, you can probably start by looking at the 7mmSTW, it is also based (if you go back a couple of cartridge generations) on a full length H&H case.

Thanks Robert I didn't realise the 300wby was over a 1/4" longer than the 7mm wby.

when I was shooting a 300 Weatherby, the powder of choice were 4350 and 4831. I don't see why these would not still be good powders for a 7mm/300 Weatherby.
