Fortunate enough to pick up a very nice 788 today in 223. Anyone know if the 222 magazine will function properly in the 223? Looking for a spare, and the 223 mags are less available than 222. Thanks

The .222 and .223 magazines are the same except for the stamp on them. I use both interchangeable.

Exactly the information I needed to know. Thank you very much sir. I was able to locate another one marked 223 this afternoon at a local gun shop. Guy pulled it out of a droor and said "here's one". How much do you want? "How's $15 sound"? Good. Couldn't get the money out of my pocket fast enough. Thanks again.

GREAT snag on the mag!

I picked up a few extra ones for my 223 788, I think I have about 3 now.

I am pretty pleased with this gun. Looks virtualy unused. One small handling mark on the stock. Bluing and bore look perfect. No wear on bolt surfaces. original sights present. Hope it shoots as good as it looks. Not sure what the twist rate is - But hope it will stabilize 60+ grains. I'd bet though, the twist is slower than what i would really want.

At a wild guess I will say the twist is probaly 1:10" or 1:12", I know this has been discussed on here before.

I like 788's, every one I had shot better than its cost should have allowed.

Watch your brass! if you use 5.56, full length resize first. Be carefull in cold weather as the bolt will freeze if water/snow gets in it and you will break the handle.
You will find the 52gr works the best
dont leave ammo in the mag the spring is weak to start with
Gun parts corp has mags that I like better

Thanks friends for your responses. Will check Gun Parts corp yo see what they have. I have noticed the week springs. Have a 788 in 44 mag. Same deal there. Also try and do a search foe info on 788's in .223

My late brother had 10 magazines for when he went prarrie dog shooting on a town of `em. That 788 was very accurate if fed the right handloads of mine.Robert
