As I was cleaning the tons of cosmoline off my new Yugo 59/66 A1 SKS last night It occurred to me that it smells a lot like Lee Liquid Alox. Do they use Cosmoline as a component of Alox? Has anyone tried to use it in a bullet lube with any success?

Alox is a rust preventive in real life. Probly quite similar.

From the lube recipie library:
************************************************** ***************
Lube Formula - Colorado Shooters

1/3 Candle Wax (140 Degree F Melting Point)
1/3 Cosmoline
1/3 Bowl Wax
4 oz. Olive Oil added per pound of lube

Ratio's are approximate and are non-critical. A little more or a little less of any
component seems to make no difference in performance. Candle wax is available at any
hobby store, which sells candle-making supplies. Cosmoline is available in small
quantities from suppliers such as Midway, USA, Inc. 1-800-243-3220 or
http://www.midwayusa.com . Bowl wax is available in any Home Depot or similar store.

I thought bowl wax (for toilets) was a bee's wax or bee's wax compound? :-?

BTW, never use used bowl wax. No, No, No...
That brown is NOT lubricant. :-o

T bowel wax was Bee's wax at one time. Now its anything they can make it from. Others have said it was a petroleum byproduct.

I believe the verdict was toilet bowl gaskets are now made from "Slack Wax".

Thanks, I did a search on the site for cosmoline and did not see that thread in the results.

Rather than purchase cosmoline from a supplier, I am going to plan on just getting it free from buying a lot of old well preserved milsurp firearms. :-)

Definition of Cosmoline

1. n. A substance obtained from the residues of the distillation of petroleum, essentially the same as vaseline, but of somewhat stiffer consistency, and consisting of a mixture of the higher paraffines; a kind of petroleum jelly.

The one time I used for real Cosmoline in the Navy, it came out of the can like water and set up into the gooey mess we all know and love/hate in a very short time. Wish I would have nabbed the rest of the gallon.
