Any woodworkers here? I'd like to make some knife handles of different colors. Do they make a stain that will turn wood green, blue, gray or whatever? I've seen some really nice knife scales at morris knives

They just use regular aniline dyes. Look on the Rit dye rack at the supermarket for whatever color you want.

I like leather dyes a bit better, they seem more color fast.

I have used the die mixed with alcohol. Then mix this with clear laquer. Wait till it dries then spray another coat of just clear. It gives it a very deep color. Try on scrap first to get the hang of it.

No, never heard of that one. About the closest I have heard of is ace hardware.

Rit dyes will do it. They can be mixed, too. They are cheaper than the Woodcraft dyes, and the water based dtes are basically the same. You need a good soaking in the dye and then a good finish or multi finish over it to pop the dye.

Sounds like a plan. I'll be trying the rit first. Thanks

Try using 'Marks-A-Lot' markers; alcohol-based dyes. I had an old Marlin Model 60 stock that I had sanded smooth and tried a red 'Marks-A-Lot' on it just to see what would happen; guy bought it from me for a $100.00!

When I was making custom wood arrows I used Rit dye mixed with alcohol, alcohol evaporates and doesnt jack with the moisture content of the wood. Have also used the same to color light colored wood like poplar or fir for jewelry and keepsake boxes. Works really well and a couple coats of urethane really makes the color look deep.

Many years ago I sanded down a .22 stock and refinished it using "ox-blood" shoe polish. Turned out real well. My daughter in law is still using that rifle and it still looks good.
