I have a metallurgist available that can anolize the metal in a RB frame. I'm sending him the tang off a black powder RB and I need a nickel size piece or larger piece from a 1897, 1902 or any #5 sporting rifle preferably with a 1901 pat. date to do a comparison to find out if there is any difference between the metal that they are made of. I will post the results here and at the ASSRA forum.

If you can help, please let me know.

Thank you,

Frank

Does the piece have to be from a sporting rifle or will one of the many late military #5 rifles do?

most scrap yards and machine shops have them, it takes seconds, and you dont need to cut up an action.

calaloo,
No, it doesn't have to be a sporting model. My first choise would be a 1902 7mm but, a 1897 would be great, too.

frnkeore,
hickstick 10's idea was a good one, what did you decide to do?

Working in a machine shop for my working career if it's the metal that your trying to diagnose, just take one to a metals yard. For $25 back a few years ago they would do what they called N.D.T. which means Non Destructive Testing. The gizmo they use is accurate within 2% and worth the $25.
