I noticed the 45 cal muzzle loaders shoot saboted 40 cal bullets in the 190-225 grain range. So anyone have experience shooting this combination?

I may be looking for a shooter that can test some bullets for me out of a 45 cal muzzleloader.

These bullets are easy to make and can be made in my custom 40 cal die. Even a plastic tip nose insert may be possible.

Here is what I got in mind. A 205 or 225 grain 40 cal bullet made from a 9mm case.

Check it out!

Brian post a thread on this forum:

The guys there are building custom smokeless muzzleloaders and do all sorts of experimentation with various bullets. Some of them would be more than willing to test fire something for you.

I like the nose profile. Are you just using a different nose punch with your standard die set or is this something different?

I was just experimenting with what maybe possible. Instead of boreing a .250 hole in the top of the die I could machine one with a .155 (for instance) and end up with somthing like this pictured above.

This would be cut with the same reamer just taking advantage of more of the ogive and in turn using a flat nose punch on top. As you can see if I cut the nose back till it was .250 then it is the same as my standard 40 cal bullets I have allready posted pics of

Any problems ejecting the bullet with the smaller hole in the die?

I officially haven't tried yet. This is the only prototype I've made so far. I simply adjusted the top stop bolt of the die to give me a stove pipe top hat look then shaved the lead. I have no doubt it will work though and I suspect it would make a good canadit for a ski binding plug nose.

I plan on making at least one of these dies in my next run of 40 cal dies. I'll keep you all posted.

BT, I dont know what the exact diameter of your bullet is but it looks like a great 405 Winchester bullet for a light load.
That bullet at 2500fps would be nasty.

Here are a couple of places that make sabots. I use a 235gr .40cal. sabot in my 50 cal T/C.

http://www.mmpsabots.com/

I use the blue on on the above link as I use the 150gr charge of pellets.

This link below has been getting a lot of very good reviews of their sabots.

If you have time this spring I could help you out with testing.

BT, I'm a regular on "Doug's" and have both smokey and smokeless .45 cal MLs. I replied on your post over there. I'll send you a PM. Best, 10 ga
