The two key points, I never know what I might buy and You never know what might show up.
I bought a 32 guage "special" H&R single shot. Yes I know what it is, no one else did either till I told them. It came with a box of plastic 32 ga shells. I guess the rifling in the barrel might not work to bad for real close shots.
The gun is a CAP-CHUR Powder Projector sold by Palmer chemical equipment Co INC for shooting darts to sedate or treat animals.
I had to check the bore it is .500 x.505 and one turn in 24 the best I can tell. Now to get some 32 ga brass shells. The only casting I have is the T-C Maxie ball. So what do you think, just guessing the shell will hold around 100 grains of black powder, smokeless I have no idea.

Sounds like a fun project. The only H&R 32 guage CAP-CHUR gun that I actually held in my hands was a smoothbore; I did not know they made any that were rifled.

I remember seeing the darts at a couple of Armories that I ran, IIRC they were about 2 1/2" long.

This gun and equipment is still available for purchase. Just Google Palmer Cap Chur, and several retail outlets will appear. Looks pretty neat and the 32 gauge shells should help make a neat project.

We had one of the guns and darts at the PD I was at for dog control many years ago. We had to get an estimation of of the dogs weight, then have the vet fill the dart. It did work, I don't remember the range but most of the dogs we delt with would run at the sight of a gun.

If the bore is 500-505, 500 s&w brass might could be made to work.

If none of the above work how about sleeve or stub it to a 32-20, 25-20 or something cool lots of possibilities.

I will have to look at the 500 brass. So far no one has left any at the range.
rh, I have been woundering if H&R will sell an unchambered 30-30- barrel. I would like a 32 S&W just for the kool factor. One gun with the capibility of darts and small game.

Have you been over to Grey Beards site? They have a whole forum devoted to the H&R's, I know that lots of guys have switch barrels plus all kinds of tune-up tips.

I have one of the 45 Colts in the carbine, I think I will try the barrel to see if it will switch. I intend to get a 28 ga barrel to make a back pack combo.

I have some Mag - tech brass coming. The question is it to thin to hold a slug. Soon to know.

They often are, but you can use wads and some have done paper wrap on the slugs to center it. ;)

Sounds like a cool project.
I question using 100grs of black powder though

Assuming you get the brass shotshells to fit it, perhaps you might be able to use the plastic muzzle loader sabots for shooting subcaliber boolits in it.

My FIL has one he used to put down cattle. IIRC correctly it uses a chamber insert and a blank cartridge to launch the dart.

He also states that there are two kinds of darts, the kind with barbs and the kind with a bulge. He says that the barbs are tought to get out and must often be cut out. The bulge just pulls right out.

You could probably sell the barrel and get H&R to re barrel it into something you can use.

The brass came in yesterday and I got a chance to try a two round expeirment. I loaded 70 grains of ffg and took a 50 caliber lee real casting with two wraps of printer paper which made a snug slip fit in the mag-tech brass.

both rounds went about 12 inches high at 25 yardsbut were 2 inches apart. The PP was in strips as I normaly find in BP PP. I checked the once fired brass, it mesured .535, just right for28 ga muzzleloading wads.
Now I can PP the casting, load powder and seat it on the over powder wad. Now to make a front sight I can clamp on and have a sighting system.

Akajun, I just had a calf that I coulh not catch, a dart would have made me cash, but I settled for beef.
